Pando leads Mustangs to runner-up showing at DBU Rogers XC Opener

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Midwestern State's Ella Pando broke up Dallas Baptist's bid for a perfect score while leading the Mustangs to a runner-up showing in the Orville Rogers XC Opener Saturday morning at Lynn Creek Park.

The sophomore from Weatherford approached her personal best 5K cross country mark on her way to placing fifth individually with a time of 18:43.80.

Pando, who raced to an 18:33.19 at the 5K Missouri Southern Stampede, has now posted the top two times for an MSU runner over the past seven years.

The Mustangs also flexed a growing depth as six runner posted cross country PRs with four coming in collegiate debuts.

Sophomore Mariana Sanchez notched her sixth team countable showing in seven collegiate meets by placing 11th with a time of 19:12.80, while fellow sophomore Rosalene Reyes Perez produced her second countable finish while taking 14th with a personal best time of 19:17.80.

Junior Jadyn Dangerfield (19:24.80) and freshman Jaycee Lyons (19:41.20) also turned in countable finishes to finish 16th and 18th, respectively.

Junior Arianna Carballeira battled her way to a PR time of 19:58.00 to place 21st, while freshmen Jazira Perez (20:04.70 / 23rd), Madison MIllan (21:19.50 / 42nd), and Bella Landrum (24:06.40 / 61st) experienced their first collegiate meet.

Dallas Baptist claimed the team win by placing nine runners in the top 10 to amass 16 points led by individual medalist KayCee Miller. The junior covered the 5K course in 18:01.60.

East Texas Baptist (103 points), UT Dallas (120), North Central Texas College (128), and Southwestern Assemblies of God (163) rounded out the field.

Midwestern State hosts the Mustang Derby Thursday night at River Creek Golf Course in Burkburnett. The 5K race begins at 7 p.m.
