WNMU Mustangs outhit MSU Mustangs in LSC Crossover

PORTALES, New Mexico --  Riley Rabedeaux led the MSU Mustangs with 13 kills on 50 swings, but Western New Mexico pulled out a 3-1 victory in the LSC Crossover match at Greyhound Arena on Friday night. Isabella Dickens hit .389 with nine kills on 18 attacks for Midwestern State.

WNMU finished the match with a .220 hitting percentage, while the MSU Mustangs hit .060 for the match.

Jazmyne Walker led Western with 19 kills and hit .333 on 48 swings, and Letcia Correa finished with 43 assists for the victorious Mustangs.

Western New Mexico closed the match by hitting .205 in the fourth set. Midwestern State managed just seven kills with eight errors on 33 swings in the final frame, and WNMU took the set, 25-18.

Janey Cortez had back-to-back kills with Logan Dodge serving, and WNMU took a 10-5 lead in the fourth set.

Walker had three kills as Western won seven of nine points to take a 17-8 lead. MSU closed to within four points but Cortez had two kills, and Jessica Salas had an ace during a five-point run that gave the WNMU Mustangs a 23-14 lead.

MSU reeled off four consecutive points before WNMU closed out the match.

After dropping the first two sets, Midwestern State raised its level in the third set. Taygon Jones delivered a service ace to put the maroon and gold up 5-1 in the third set.

WNMU tied the set at 7-7, and neither team led by more than two points until Midwestern State closed the set by winning five straight points.

Isabella Dickens and Alayna Guerrero each had a kill and teamed up for a block during the run for the MSU Mustangs.

Midwestern State hit .122 with 12 kills on 41 attacks and seven errors during the third set. WNMU hit .158 with 11 kills and five errors, but MSU extended the match by winning the set, 25-21.

The second set featured seven ties and two lead changes. Midwestern State pulled even at 8-8 with an ace from Allie Hesselgesser. After a Jaiden Wright kill tied the set, 15-15, WNMU won six of the next nine points. Janey Cortez and Kimble had kills during the run for Western, which took a 21-18 lead. Jazmyne Walker had two kills as WNMU fended off MSU for a 25-21 triumph.

WNMU hit .137 with 15 kills on 51 swings in the second set. Midwestern State had 15 kills for the match after two sets and hit .093 in the second set.

Western New Mexico went on a seven-point run after falling behind in the first set, 3-1. Naomi Kimble and Maria Osorio each had two kills during the run for WNMU, which took an 8-3 lead. Midwestern State got to within two points, but Kimble started another five-point run for Western with a kill. Letcia Correa had an ace during the run, and WNMU took a 22-11 lead. The two teams exchanged kills over the final five points of the set with Osorio securing a 25-14 victory for WNMU.

The purple and gold clad Mustangs from Silver City, New Mexico, hit .452 in the opening set with 17 kills on 31 swings. Midwestern State had six kills on 32 swings and had five errors in the first set.

Jones finished with 19 digs for the MSU Mustangs, and Alayna Guerrero had 20 of the 34 assists in the match. Dickens was in on four of the five blocks for MSU, and WNMU finished the match with eight blocks.

Midwestern State is scheduled to play twice on Saturday. The maroon and gold Mustangs face St. Edward's at Greyhound Arena at noon. MSU takes on Eastern New Mexico in its final match of the LSC Crossover at 4 p.m.
