Three second-half goals propel Mustangs over Westminster, 3-0

SALT LAKE CITY --Senior forward Maycol Reyes, a transfer from North Carolina-Greensboro, scored his first goal for Midwestern State in the 59th minute for Midwestern State, and the Mustangs went on to defeat Westminster in the season opener at Dumke Field on Thursday night, 3-0.

The Mustangs outshot Westminster, 9-1, but seven of the shots came in the second half for Midwestern State.

Senior forward Mere Escobar from Austin, Texas, opened his account by burying a penalty kick in the 69th minute after Ole Songe was called for a foul in the box.

Gabriel Gacovicaj, a junior forward from Rimini, Italy, put the game out of reach as he scored in the 81st minute, assisted by senior defenseman Sebastian Kennedy and fifth-year senior midfielder Jack Larkin..

Goalkeeper Adam Braman stopped the only shot he faced. The junior from Mercer Island, Washington, denied the Griffins' senior midfielder, Brayden Reid, in the 77th minute.

Midwestern State won its season opener for the ninth straight season, including a 3-2 win over Colorado Mesa last year in Laredo, Texas. The Mustangs will face the Mavericks again in Salt Lake City on Saturday. Kickoff at Dumke Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
