Escobar, No. 17-ranked Mustangs send Colorado Mesa packing

SALT LAKE CITY -- Midwestern State's Mere Escobar converted a penalty kick for the second-straight match to lift the 17th-ranked Mustangs to a 1-0 win over Colorado Mesa Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 for the seventh consecutive season after also beating home standing Westminster 3-0 on Thursday.

Escobar broke free on a through ball in the 88th minute and was taken down in the 16-yard box as he split a pair of defenders.

The senior from Austin then beat Colorado Mesa goalkeeper Diego Chavez to the right side of the net for the deciding goal.

It is the second consecutive year the Mustangs knocked off Colorado Mesa in the season opening weekend. MSU rolled to a season opening 3-2 victory last season in Laredo.

Colorado Mesa claimed a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International on Thursday under third-year coach Jon Friday.

Escobar has now converted 6-of-7 penalty kicks and has amassed 29 goals during his run with the Mustangs.

Midwestern State dominated the stat sheet, out-shooting the Mavericks 18-9 with seven shots landing on frame.

Junior goalkeeper Adam Braman needed to make just two saves to cinch his second straight shutout.

The Mustangs open the home slate with a showdown against Rogers State (Okla.) Thursday night at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
