MSU meets Red River Rival in South Central Regional

LAWTON, Okla. -- Midwestern State is making its 10th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. The Mustangs are the No. 4 seed in the South Central Region and are visiting top-seeded Cameron in a preliminary-round dual match at Streich-Henry Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Monday. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division II Nationals Round of 16 in Orlando, Florida, and vie for a national championship.

MSU reached the NCAA postseason for the 22nd time, but the Mustangs have lost in the preliminary round each of the last two years. Last year, St. Mary's defeated Midwestern State, 4-1, in the South Central Regional at Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex in San Antonio.

Midwestern State has reached the NCAA Division II Nationals Round of 16 eight times in its history and has been a quarterfinalist twice, most recently in 2017, when the Mustangs defeated Indiana (Pa.), 5-0, before falling to fifth-ranked Armstrong State, 5-2, at Salando Park Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Midwestern State is 17-7 overall after finishing 8-2 in the Lone Star Conference and was the No. 2 seed in the LSC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. Lubbock Christian eliminated the Mustangs in the quarterfinals, 4-3. The Chaparrals were ousted in the semifinals by St. Mary's, 4-0, and the Rattlers went on to win the tournament championship with a 4-2 win over Angelo State.

Cameron boasted a 15-3 record overall this season and was 9-1 in the LSC. The Aggies only loss in conference play during the regular season was a 4-3 setback at MSU Tennis Center on April 13. Cameron saw a 14-dual match winning streak come to an end when Skylar Minns clinched the victory for Midwestern State with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Magda Warowska at No. 5 singles.

Cameron makes its 20th appearance in the postseason and advanced to the round of 16 last year by defeating Angelo State in the South Central Regional at Steich-Henry Tennis Complex, 4-1.

Midwestern State defeated the Aggies in the 2018 regional at Wichita Falls, 5-3, and Cameron eliminated Midwestern State in the 2016 regional, 5-2, in Lawton.

Cameron leads the all-time series, 29-28-1, but the Mustangs have won six of the last eight meetings. Midwestern State is 13-15 all-time when visiting the Aggies.

Amelia Lawson is 14-9 in singles for the Mustangs this season and has played all her matches at No. 1 singles. The senior from New Zealand has won seven of her last eight matches. The only setback in that span was a 6-7 (2), 2-6 loss to 26th-ranked Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron in the regular season dual match.

Alice Di Matteo has made five consecutive appearances at No. 2 singles and defeated Lea Manga, 6-3, 6-1, when Cameron visited Midwestern State in the penultimate dual match of the regular season. Di Matteo is 10-10 in singles this season with a 3-3 record at No. 2 singles.

Hannah Yip had a titanic battle at No. 3 singles in the regular season encounter with Cameron. After splitting the first two sets, Yip was up 5-4 in the third set and had two match points, but Kateryna Rudenko staved off defeat and came back to win the match, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Yip and Rudenko exchanged baseline rallies for nearly three hours.

Yip was recently named the Robert Grays 24-Strong Teammate of the Year for women's tennis at MSU, and the sophomore received the Mustang Scholar Award for women's tennis.

Emilija Visic has won her last three matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jenna Goessel of Cameron at No. 4 singles. The junior from Phoenix has won six of her last eight singles matches, and she is 13-9 overall this season with an 11-8 mark at No. 4 singles.

Midwestern State is 13-5 this season at No. 5 singles, led by Minns, who is 9-2 in the No. 5 position and 13-3 overall in singles this season. The junior from New Braunfels, Texas,  is 3-0 in her career when facing an opponent from Cameron.

The Mustangs are 13-6 at No. 6 singles with Micaela McSpadden going 8-3 in the No. 6 position. McSpadden has won six of her last eight matches but suffered a 2-6, 6-3, 8-10 loss to Karolina Glowinska of Cameron earlier this month.

Sydney Williams and Lawson have led the Mustangs in doubles this season. The 35th-ranked duo has won its last three matches and is 15-6 this year, including a 6-3 win against Manga and Glowinska at No. 1 doubles in the dual match against Cameron on April 13.

The Mustangs clinched the doubles point against the Aggies when Di Matteo and Visic posted a 6-3 win over Polunova and Rudenko at No. 2 doubles.

Midwestern State is 41-26 in doubles this season, while Cameron is 33-16. Polunova and Anastasia Upenskaia have been the most successful pairing for the Aggies with a 10-3 record at No. 1 singles, and the duo is ranked No. 25 in the nation.

The other dual match in the South Central Region is in San Antonio, where St. Mary's is hosting Angelo State. The Rattlers are the automatic qualifier after winning the LSC Tournament and are the No. 2 seed in the region. The Rambelles are seeded third in the region.
