ARLINGTON, Texas -- Lubbock Christian upset second-seeded Midwestern State in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, 4-3. Play began on Thursday but was suspended due to inclement weather at the Arlington Tennis Center and resumed Friday morning.
When lightning brought play to a halt on Thursday, No. 7-seed Lubbock Christian held a 2-1 lead after the Chaparrals won the doubles point, and Michelle Trochez defeated
Alice Di Matteo at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Emilija Visic put the Mustangs on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Emily Bo Meyer at No. 4 singles on Thursday. Visic earned her third straight win for MSU and improved to 13-9 for the season.
The dual match was knotted 3-3 with sophomore left-hander
Hannah Yip facing Axelle Jacquemin of the Chaparrals at No. 3 singles. Jacquemin won the first set, 6-3, and Yip took the second set, 6-2. The third set was tied 3-3 when play resumed on Friday.
The match was decided in a third-set tiebreak, and Jacquemin prevailed, 7-4, sending Lubbock Christian to the semifinals.
Sophomore
Micaela McSpadden pulled Midwestern State even with the Chaparrals, 2-2, with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) triumph over Anastasia Opolska at No. 6 singles. McSpadden improved to 9-5 for the season and 7-3 in the No. 6 position.
Amelia Lawson, a fifth-year senior from New Zealand, gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead with her seventh win in eight matches, defeating Ana Khurstaleva at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5. Lawson is 14-9 in singles this season for the Mustangs.
Sophomore
Skylar Minns of Midwestern State dropped the first set, 6-4, but held a 4-2 lead in the second set against Maya Adler at No. 5 singles when play was suspended on Thursday. Minns went on to win the second set, 6-2, but Adler stormed to a 6-1 victory in the third set to tie the dual match, 3-3.
Midwestern State, which is 14-7 against Division II opponents, was No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings and waits for the NCAA Division II championship field to be announced on Monday. The announcement will be made via video stream on NCAA.com at 7:30 p.m.
