Kerris Cameron leads MSU power surge in twin bill split at WNMU

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Kerris Cameron smashed her first two collegiate home runs to lead Midwestern State to a doubleheader split against Western New Mexico Friday afternoon at the WNMU Softball Field.

The junior from Longview connected on homers in both games as MSU claimed a 4-3 win in the opener, before Western New Mexico rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the nightcap, 8-7.

Midwestern State and WNMU close the three-game Lone Star Conference series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (Central Time).

MSU moved to 9-38 on the season and 8-30 in Lone Star Conference play, while WNMU stands at 8-38 and 6-32.

GAME 1 | Midwestern State 4, Western New Mexico 3

Kerris Cameron and Jessika Roberts belted home runs to make Kennedy Cameron's strong effort in the circle stand up for a 4-3 win in Game 1 Friday at the WNMU Softball Field.

MSU jumped out to an early when Roberts reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning. The junior outfielder stole second and third base to set up a sacrifice fly by Allie Monroe to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

The run snapped a 39-inning scoreless streak for Midwestern State and ignited the Mustangs' attack.

Kerris Cameron added to the lead by launching her first collegiate homer with two outs in the second inning. The Longview native drilled a 2-1 offering over the left-field fence to push MSU's advantage to 2-0.

Roberts connected on her second home run of the season in the fifth inning -- a two-run shot to right field -- to push Midwestern's advantage to four runs.

Western New Mexico battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Nichole Armijo's run-scoring double to left field scoring Kennedy Jarred all the way from first base.

WNMU added another unearned run in the seventh inning.

Kennedy Cameron permitted one earned run on nine hits in the complete game win to improve to 4-10 in the circle.

Roberts produced her fourth multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while scoring two runs. She accounted for a home run and stole two bases.

Freshman catcher Megan Ayala logged two hits for the third time this season.

WNMU freshman Kamerynn Cordova (4-19) took the loss in the circle allowing four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings.

GAME 2 | Western New Mexico 8, Midwestern State 7

Kaylee Hickman belted a walk-off, two-run homer down the left field line to lift Western New Mexico to a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Midwestern State in Game 2 Friday afternoon at the WNMU Softball Field.

Hickman's blast negated a stirring two-out rally by MSU in the top of the inning as WNMU salvaged the twin bill split.

Allie Monroe and Bailey Brenek ignited the uprising with back-to-back singles before Lexi Mills blasted her second home run of the season high off the light pole in left field to give Midwestern a 7-5 lead.

But Bryana Munoz led off the bottom of the frame with her second homer of the game to put WNMU in motion.

Jenna Peters followed with a pinch-hit single to center field before Hickman drilled her third homer of the season on a no-doubter down the left-field line.

Hickman's heroics spoiled Midwestern State's best hitting day of the year as the Mustangs legged out a season-high 11 hits.

Monroe, Brenek, and Paige Bryant all had two hits for the Mustangs, while Kerris hit her second home run of the day in the sixth inning.

Bryana Munoz paced WNMU with a pair of homers to drive in three runs, while Hickman and Madeline Bleak also accounted for home runs.

Western New Mexico leadoff hitter Adlai Alividrez paced an 11-hit attack with three hits.
