SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Senior
Bailey Brenek unloaded her first collegiate grand slam, and
Jessika Roberts had four hits including her third homer of the season to lift Midwestern State to a 7-2 win in the series finale over Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon at the WNMU Softball Field.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 10-38 on the season and moved to 9-30 in Lone Star Conference play, while WNMU dipped to 8-39 and 6-33.
Brenek capped a five-run inning by drilling a 1-2 offering over the left-field fence for her first homer of the season.
MSU loaded the bases on a pair of infield singles by
Paige Bryant and Roberts, while
Payton Griffin was hit by a pitch.
Freshman
Allie Monroe followed with an RBI-single to left field to set up Brenek's grand slam which staked the Mustangs to a 6-0 lead.
Roberts slugged an opposite field home run to put Midwestern State on the board in the first inning. It was the first of four hits for the junior from Forney. She added a bunt single in the second before doubling to the right-field gap in the fourth and seventh innings.
Roberts became the first MSU player to record four hits in a game since Bailey Wamsley four hits against UT Permian Basin on April 11, 2019.
She closed the weekend going 7-for-12 with three RBIs and scored six runs, and recorded three stolen bases.
MSU's
Zoe Isom and
Jasmine Trevino combined to take a shutout into the seventh inning before WNMU's Kaylee Hickman ended the bid with a leadoff home run to left field.
Isom pitched the first five innings before returning to relieve Trevino in the seventh inning. The Midlothian native claimed the win to improve to 4-7 in the circle spreading five hits over six scoreless innings.
Starter Emily Maddux (0-10) took the loss for Western New Mexico after allowing six earned runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings before giving way to freshman Kamerynn Cordova, allow one run on three hits over the final 5 1/3 innings.
Ciara Salazar and Kennedy Jarrad had two hits each to lead WNMU.
Midwestern State plays host to St. Edward's for the final three-game series of the season next weekend at Mustangs Park. The Mustangs and Hilltoppers begin the series with a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday before closing the regular season with a single game on Saturday beginning at noon.
