Mustangs hope to cool off No. 9-ranked Cameron

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State (15-6) has won four of its last five dual matches, including a 4-3 win at UT Tyler on Tuesday. The Mustangs are hosting No. 9-ranked Cameron (13-1) on Thursday, and the Aggies are 8-0 in the Lone Star Conference and have a 13-dual winning streak. First serve at MSU Tennis Center is scheduled for noon.

The Mustangs are in a three-way tie for second place with Angelo State and St. Mary's. All three teams are 6-2 in conference play this season. The Mustangs are 7-1 at home and 3-0 when hosting conference opponents this season.

Cameron is 5-1 as the visiting team this season, and its only loss was at UT Arlington on Feb. 17.

Midwestern State has won five of its last seven meetings with Cameron, which prevailed at Wichita Falls last year, 4-3. The Aggies lead the all-time series, 29-27-1, and boast a 12-11-1 record when visiting Midwestern State.

Amelia Lawson has a five-match winning streak for the Mustangs after defeating Brooklyn Ross of UT Tyler, 6-4, 0-6, 6-0. The fifth-year senior from New Zealand is 5-3 against LSC opponents and 12-8 overall at No. 1 singles.

Alice Di Matteo has won her last two matches in the No. 2 position for MSU, including a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Tanvikhaa Saravanan of UT Tyler. Di Matteo has won three of her last four singles matches and is 9-8 this season. Di Matteo is 2-1 at No. 2 singles and 7-7 at the No. 3 position for the Mustangs.

Emilija Visic is coming off a 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 loss to Allison Schwartz of UT Tyler and fell to 8-8 in the No. 4 position. It was the second straight loss for the junior from Phoenix. Visic is 10-9 overall with a 4-4 record against LSC opponents.

Skylar Minns rebounded from a loss at Dallas Baptist and earned a critical point at UT Tyler on Tuesday, defeating Kanika Siviraman in the No. 5 position, 7-6 (7), 6-4. Minns is 12-2 this season in singles and has won six of her eight matches against conference foes.

Micaela McSpadden clinched the victory at UT Tyler on Tuesday with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory over Akshaya Suresh at No. 6 singles. McSpadden has won four of her last five singles matches and is 8-4 in singles with a 5-2 record in LSC matches.

Sydney Williams is 6-4 in singles this season and fell to 2-1 in conference play with a 2-6, 5-7 loss to Jenna Payne of Dallas Baptist at No. 6 singles on Saturday. Williams was coming off a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kajsa Gedlitschka of Western New Mexico.

Williams and Lawson are ranked No. 32 in doubles with a 12-6 record this season. The duo won their first six encounters with conference opponents but have lost their last two matches at Dallas Baptist and UT Tyler. Prior to those setbacks, the duo had an eight-match winning streak for the Mustangs.

Di Matteo and Kanaha Furutani fell to 4-4 against LSC opponents with a 0-6 loss to Violetta Khisamova and Brooklyn Ross of UT Tyler. The Mustangs' duo is 10-10 in doubles overall and 8-10 in the No. 2 position this season.

Minns and Visic are coming off back-to-back losses. They were surprised by Sofia Teran and Isabella Rios of Dallas Baptist on Saturday, 7-5. At UT Tyler on Tuesday, the formidable pairing was upended, 6-0, by Sarvanan and Siviraman. The duo is 10-3 overall in doubles with a 5-3 record against LSC opponents.

Vailisa Polunova of Cameron has won LSC women's tennis player of the week honors in each of the last two weeks Polunova is 11-4 this season at No. 1 singles and has reeled off seven consecutive victories since losing to Dianela Rodriguez of Angelo State on March 12, 6-7 (6), 0-6. Polunova is coming off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Blythe Buntrock of Central Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Polunova captured a point against the Mustangs last season, defeating Anda Ghinga in the No. 1 singles slot, 6-3, 6-3.

Kateryna Rudenko is 10-2 over with an 8-0 record against LSC opponents this season. Rudenko has posted an 8-1 record in the No. 4 position and has a nine-match winning streak for the Aggies. Rudenko defeated Visic at No. 4 singles last year, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Polunova and Anastasia Uspenskaia are 9-3 at No. 1 doubles and ended a three-match skid with a 7-5 win over Nikki Boyar and Buntrock of Central Oklahoma in Edmond on Tuesday.

The Aggies are 27-11 overall in doubles this season. Cameron won the doubles point en route to its 4-3 victory over the Mustangs at MSU Tennis Center last year.

Midwestern State returns to the court on Saturday and will celebrate Senior Day as Arkansas-Fort Smith visits MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for noon.
