TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State (14-6) looks to rebound from a 5-2 loss at Dallas Baptist with a trip to Summers Tennis Center for a Lone Star Conference clash against UT Tyler (11-7) on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. The Mustangs and Patriots are tied for fourth place in the conference with 5-2 records against LSC opponents.
The two schools are meeting for the sixth time, and the Mustangs have never lost a dual-match to the Patriots. Last year,
Emilija Visic clinched the victory with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Chloe Chawner at No. 5 singles, and the Mustangs defeated UT Tyler, 5-2, at MSU Tennis Center. Midwestern State pulled out a 4-3 victory two years ago in its last visit to Summers Tennis Center.
Amelia Lawson has a four-match winning streak for the Mustangs after defeating Madison Stafford of Dallas Baptist, 10-5, in a match tiebreak on Saturday. The fifth-year senior from New Zealand is 4-3 against LSC opponents and 11-8 overall at No. 1 singles.
Alice Di Matteo was the only other Mustang to secure a point in the loss at Dallas Baptist. The fifth-year senior from Palermo, Italy, appeared in the No. 2 position for just the second time this season and defeated Leonie Schondelmaier, 6-4, 6-3, improving to 3-3 in conference matches. Di Matteo has won two of her last three singles matches and is 8-8 this season. Di Matteo is 1-1 at No. 2 singles and 7-7 at the No. 3 position for the Mustangs.
Visic had a three-match winning streak halted with a 4-6, 5-7 loss to Caroline Hudson at No. 3 singles against Dallas Baptist on Saturday. Visic is 4-3 against conference opponents this season and 1-1 in her career against UT Tyler. The junior from Phoenix is 2-1 at No. 3 singles and 10-8 overall this season. Visic has scored eight wins in the No. 4 position.
Skylar Minns is coming off her second loss of the season in singles. Isabella Rios of Dallas Baptist defeated Minns at No. 4 singles in her last outing, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6. Minns had an eight-match winning streak snapped at Angelo State but rebounded with three consecutive victories, including two wins in match tiebreaks.
Micaela McSpadden suffered a 2-6, 1-6 loss to Sofia Teran of Dallas Baptist in the No. 5 position on Saturday. The setback ended a three-match winning streak and dropped McSpadden to 7-4 overall this season. The sophomore from Oologah, Oklahoma, is 4-2 in conference matches.
Sydney Williams is 6-4 in singles this season and fell to 2-1 in conference play with a 2-6, 5-7 loss to Jenna Payne of Dallas Baptist at No. 6 singles on Saturday. Williams was coming off a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kajsa Gedlitschka of Western New Mexico.
Williams and Lawson are ranked No. 32 in doubles with a 12-5 record this season. The duo won their first six encounters with conference opponents but fell to 12th-ranked Angela Alfred and Jenna Payne of Dallas Baptist on Saturday, 6-1. The loss snapped an eight-match winning streak for the duo at the No. 1 position, and they lost to a conference foe for the first time this season in seven outings.
Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani fell to 4-3 against LSC opponents with a 6-4 loss to Madison Stafford and Caroline Hudson of Dallas Baptist. The Mustangs' duo is 10-9 in doubles overall and 8-9 in the No. 2 position this season.
Minns and Visic are coming off their second loss of the season as they were surprised by Sofia Teran and Isabella Rios of Dallas Baptist at No. 3 doubles, 7-5. The duo is 10-2 overall in doubles with a 5-2 record against LSC opponents.
UT Tyler is 4-2 at home this season and has posted a 5-2 conference record with losses to No. 18-ranked Cameron and No.-17 ranked St. Mary's.
UT Tyler defeated Lubbock Christian, 5-2, on Senior Day at Summers Tennis Center. The Patriots were coming off a 5-2 loss at Cameron on April 3.
Brooklyn Ross is 9-8 at No. 1 singles for the Patriots and has a 4-3 record against conference opponents. Ross was upended by Anastasiia Khrustalev of Lubbock Christian in her last outing, 0-6, 2-6. Ross has lost four of her last six matches for the Patriots.
Tanvikhaa Saravanan has been a consistent presence at No. 2 singles for UT Tyler. Saravanan is 12-6 in singles this season and defeated Michelle Trochez of Lubbock Christian, 6-4, 6-3.
Violetta Khisamova is coming off a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 win over Axelle Jacquemin of Lubbock Christian at No. 3 singles, clinching the victory for the Patriots.
Allison Schwartz had a seven-match winning streak snapped with a 4-6, 3-6 loss to Kateryna Rudenko of Cameron but rebounded with a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory over Emily Bo Meyer of Lubbock Christian. Schwartz improved to 12-5 in singles overall with the win.
Akshaya Suresh has lost four of her last five singles matches, including a 2-6, 2-6 loss to Jenna Goessel of Cameron in her last outing.
Kanika Siviraman is 4-1 against conference foes in singles matches. She has played at both the No. 5 and No. 6 positions for UT Tyler. Siviraman defeated Oshini Herath of Lubbock Christian, 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-1.
UT Tyler swept the three doubles matches to earn a point against Lubbock Christian in its last dual. The Patriots have earned the doubles point in five of their seven conference duals this season.
Midwestern State hosts Cameron at MSU Tennis Center on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for noon.
