No. 23 West Texas A&M sweeps past Mustangs

CANYON, Texas -- No. 23-ranked West Texas A&M completed a sweep of Midwestern State by taking both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Schaeffer Park.< br="">
The Lady Buffs won the opener 11-2 in five innings before rolling to a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

Midwestern State fell to 2-20 on the season and 1-14 in the Lone Star Conference, while Angelo State improved 18-3 and 9-3.

GAME 1 | West Texas A&M 11, Midwestern State 2 (5 innings)

Julie Guzman collected a season-high three hits and connected on her fifth home run of the season to lead No. 23-ranked West Texas A&M to an 11-2 win in Game 1 over Midwestern State in five innings Wednesday afternoon.

The junior from Reseda, California, followed an RBI-single in the first inning with a three-run blast to left field in the fourth as the Lady Buffs remained perfect through 10 home games improving to 17-3 on the season and 8-3 in Lone Star Conference play.

Heidi Vortherms improved to 3-0 with seven strikeouts over the first three innings before giving way for scoreless single innings of relief from Emilee Wilson and Emma Parrish as the trio combined on a one-hitter.

Freshman Kayla Bryant extended her hitting streak to three games with a single to the right-field gap to ignite a two-run third inning.

Chloe Bryant reached on a dropped third strike, then advanced to third on Kayla Bryant's single to right field. Chloe came on to score when the ball got away from WT's shortstop when Kayla stole second to put the Mustangs on the board.

Kayla Bryant added a second run with aggressive base running on Levi Luna's groundout to shortstop. Bryant took third, then scored on an errant throw to third base to cut the Lady Buffs' advantage to 4-2.

But WT answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by Madison Johnson's two-run double down the left-field line.

Guzman closed out the game with a three-run shot in the fourth.

Sophomore Zoe Isom (0-2) took the loss for MSU allowing seven earned runs on three hits with six walks in two innings.

GAME 2 | West Texas A&M 7, Midwestern State 0

West Texas A&M's Kyra Lair pitched six scoreless innings while leading the No. 23-ranked Lady Buffs to a 7-0 win over Midwestern State in the series finale Wednesday afternoon at Schaeffer Park.

The senior from Canyon needed just 83 pitches to register 10 strikeouts while improving to 5-1 in the circle.

Emilee Boyer, Gabriella Valforte, and Shyanne Sanchez had two hits each to pace WT's 10-hit attack, while Diana Murtha connected on her fourth homer of the season in the fifth inning.

The Lady Buffs scored single runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings, and had two runs in the third and sixth innings to roll to a series sweep of the Mustangs.

MSU freshman Kayla Bryant extended her team-best hitting to four consecutive games with a leadoff double in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Levi Luna provided the Mustangs second hit with a double down the left-field line after Bailey Brenek worked for a leadoff walk in the third inning. But Lair retired the next three batters to keep the Mustangs off of the board.

Sophomore Taylor McKenzie (0-8) went the distance for the Mustangs allowing five earned runs on 10 hits.

UP NEXT | Midwestern State takes on UT Permian Basin in a three-game Lone Star Conference series this weekend at Mustangs Park. The teams are slated for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday before playing a single game Sunday at noon.
