WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 38-ranked Midwestern State (13-5) is back at MSU Tennis Center for a Lone Star Conference dual-match against UT Permian Basin (2-10) on Saturday. The Mustangs are coming off a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Western New Mexico at home on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
SERVING UP MUSTANG NOTES
Midwestern State has won the last nine meetings and leads the all-time series with the Falcons, 9-1. Last year, the Mustangs scored a 5-2 victory at Midland as the Falcons earned their first two points in the last four encounters. UTPB has only won four total points in the last nine dual matches against Midwestern State, and the Falcons have earned one point in three visits to Wichita Falls since 2014.
Amelia Lawson posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Willemijn Van Mierlo of WNMU on Friday. The fifth-year senior from New Zealand has played No. 1 singles in all 18 duals this year and has an 9-8 record for the Mustangs. Four of her losses have come against nationally ranked opponents.
Hannah Yip has won four of her last seven singles matches for the Mustangs, including a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 39th-ranked Letizia Corsini of Angelo State last Saturday. Yip lost to Rhea Shing at No. 2 at UTPB last season.
Emilija Visic has posted back-to-back wins for the Mustangs, earning her second win at the No. 3 position on Friday with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Livia Leite of WNMU. Visic is 9-7 in singles overall this season with seven wins coming in the No. 4 position.
Skylar Minns, a junior from New Braunfels, Texas, has chalked up two victories since suffering her first loss of the season at Angelo State last week. Minns routed Caini Wang of WNMU at No. 4 singles on Friday, 6-2, 6-0. Minns is 10-1 in singles and 4-0 at home for the Mustangs. Minns is 6-1 in the No. 5 position for MSU.
Micaela McSpadden has won six of her last seven matches in singles and is 4-0 at home without dropping a set. McSpadden battled to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mann-Ning Li of WNMU at No. 5 singles on Friday. The sophomore is 6-3 on the season with a 5-2 record in the No. 6 position.
Sydney Williams is 5-1 in singles matches at MSU Tennis Center this season. Her only loss came against Nicole Donnelly of Missouri Western in a grueling three-set affair on March 22. Williams has played both the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in the lineup this season and is 6-3 overall. Williams had little trouble in windy conditions on Friday and blasted Kajsa Gedlitschka of WNMU, 6-0, 6-0.
Midwestern State is 34-16 in doubles matches this season.
Lawson and Williams are 11-4 at the No. 1 position and have won all five doubles matches against conference opponents this season.
Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani are 4-1 in conference duals, including a 6-4 victory over WNMU in the No. 2 position.
Visic and Minns are 9-1 in the No. 3 doubles spot, and their only loss was in a tiebreak at Angelo State.
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NET
UTPB snapped a six-dual losing streak with a 6-1 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith at Bush Tennis Center in Midland last week. The Falcons improved to 4-12 for the season, and they are 2-4 in the LSC. UTPB is 2-5 as the visitor this year and is 0-3 all-time at the MSU Tennis Center.
Brooke Runyan is 7-4 in singles for the Falcons and has won three of her last four matches, including a 7-5, 6-1 win over Isabella Serrano of UAFS last week.
Rhea Singh snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Petra Csizmadia of UAFS. Singh is 4-8 at the No. 2 position for the Falcons.
Teodora Vrucan of Bosnia halted a five-match skid with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 win over Joanna Potet at No. 1 singles in the dual with UAFS last week. Vrucan is 2-5 against LSC opponents this season.
Lisa Guitton, a senior from Claix, France, scored straight-set victories over Cameron and UAFS last week and improved to 2-5 in conference matches. Guitton is 3-9 in singles overall this year.
Thanh Nguyen is 4-8 in the No. 3 position for the Falcons and is coming off a 6-3, 7-5 loss to UAFS. Nguyen has lost six of her last seven matches, but she is 3-3 in LSC confrontations this season.
UTPB swept the doubles against UAFS, but the Falcons have only won three points from doubles over the last 12 duals.
Singh and Nguyen defeated Cameron at No. 2 doubles and handled UAFS at the No. 1 position. The duo has won their last four matches against conference opponents.
Guitton and Runyan are 8-3 in doubles matches, and they are 5-2 against LSC foes this season.
