WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 38-ranked Midwestern State (12-5) returns to MSU Tennis Center for a Lone Star Conference dual-match against Western New Mexico (3-5) on Friday. The Mustangs are coming off a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Lubbock Christian at the conclusion of a three-dual road trip. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Midwestern State has dominated the series and has only lost three points in six duals against the WNMU Mustangs. MSU posted a 7-0 victory at Western New Mexico last year. MSU stymied WNMU in 2021, when the WNMU Mustangs last visited Wichita Falls, 6-1. The first meeting between the schools was in 2007 in Portales, New Mexico, and the Maroon and Gold prevailed, 7-2.
Amelia Lawson posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Anastasiia Khrustaleva in Lubbock on Tuesday. The fifth-year senior from New Zealand has played No. 1 singles in all 17 duals this year and has an 8-8 record for the Mustangs. Four of her losses have come against nationally ranked opponents.
Hannah Yip has won four of her last six singles matches for the Mustangs, including a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 39th-ranked Letizia Corsini of Angelo State on Saturday. Yip handled Kajsa Gedlitschka of Western New Mexico, 6-3, 6-4, when the two faced off in No. 2 singles at Silver City, New Mexico, last season. Yip is 2-2 in conference matches this season and 7-8 overall. The sophomore from Malaysia has filled the No. 2 position in 16 duals this season.
Alice Di Matteo is coming off a 6-2, 6-3 win over Axelle Jacquemin of Lubbock Christian at No. 3 singles. The fifth-year senior from Palermo, Italy, is 2-2 when facing conference foes in singles matches this season, including a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over
Kyndall Quiroz of St. Mary's, who was ranked 18th in the region. Di Matteo is 3-2 at home this season with a 7-7 record in singles overall.
Emilija Visic halted a three-match skid with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Oshini Herath of Lubbock Christian and improved to 2-2 in conference clashes this season. Visic is 2-0 in her singles career against opponents from Western New Mexico. In 2021, Visic defeated Kajsa Gedlitschka, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 position. Last year, the Phoenix native played No. 4 singles in Silver City and defeated Canini Wang, 7-5, 6-2. The junior is 8-7 in singles matches for MSU this season.
Skylar Minns, a junior from New Braunfels, Texas, had an eight-match winning streak snapped at Angelo State, but improved to 9-1 with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-2 victory over Maya Adler of Lubbock Christian at No. 5 singles on Tuesday. Minns is 3-1 against conference opponents. Minns defeated Nocold Gonzalez in the No. 6 position at Western New Mexico last year, 6-0, 6-2. Minns is 6-1 in the No. 5 spot this season.
Sydney Williams is 4-1 in singles matches at MSU Tennis Center this season. Her only loss came against Nicole Donnelly of Missouri Western in a grueling three-set affair on March 22. Williams has played both the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in the lineup this season and is 5-3 overall. Williams won her only conference match of the campaign. The sophomore handled Stela Sifuentes of St. Mary's, who was ranked No. 13 in the region, 6-2, 6-4.
Micaela McSpadden has won two of her last three matches against conference opponents in the No. 6 position. McSpadden defeated Annika Gomez at Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-3, 6-2, and outlasted Anastasiia Opolska at Lubbock Christian, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. The sophomore lost to Ramitha Irrinki 6-7 (3), 5-7, at Angelo State. McSpadden is 3-0 and has not dropped a set at home this season.
Midwestern State is 31-16 in doubles matches this season.
Lawson and Williams are 10-4 at the No. 1 position and have won all four doubles matches against conference opponents this season.
Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani are 3-1 in conference duals, including a 6-1 victory at Lubbock Christian in the No. 2 position.
Visic and Minns are 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles spot, and their only loss was in a tiebreak at Angelo State.
Western New Mexico is 1-4 against LSC opponents. The WNMU Mustangs are coming off a 7-0 loss to Cameron in Silver City. WNMU is 3-3 as the visiting team this season.
WNMU is 2-8 at No. 1 singles. Willemijn Van Mierlo has lost her last five starts at the No. 1 position, including a 1-6, 2-6 loss to Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron on Saturday.
Jenny Larsson is 3-6 overall for the visiting Mustangs but has won two of her last four matches in the No. 2 position, including a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Petra Csizmadia of Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Livia Leite of Brazil is 1-5 at No. 3 singles and lost her last three matches in straight sets after defeating Madison Stafford of Dallas Baptist, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, on March 11 in Arlington, Texas.
Caini Wang of Taiwan is 6-2 at No. 4 singles and had a three-match winning streak snapped with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Katerna Rudenko of Cameron.
Mann-Ning Li is 5-5 in the No. 5 position and is coming off a 4-6, 3-6 loss to Jenna Goessel of Cameron on the heels of a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sarayi Serrano of Sul Ross State.
Kajsa Gedlitschka is 5-3 at No. 6 singles for WNMU but has not won since defeating Chloe Dix of UT Tyler, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.
WNMU is 14-15 in doubles this season. Wang and Gedlitschka are 2-1 in conference duals and 6-4 overall in doubles this season. The duo is 4-4 in the No. 1 doubles position.
Larsson and Leite are 2-5 in the No. 2 doubles spot with a 1-4 record against LSC foes following a 4-6 loss to Cameron on Saturday.
Mierlo and Li scored a 6-2 victory at Biola earlier this month but are 0-5 conference duals this season.
Midwestern State is back on the court Saturday morning at 10 a.m. as UT Permian Basin visits MSU Tennis Center.
