Western New Mexico visits venerable MSU Tennis Center

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 28-ranked Midwestern State (12-7) hopes to remain undefeated in Lone Star Conference dual matches as Western New Mexico (5-6) visits MSU Tennis Center on Friday. The MSU Mustangs improved to 2-0 in conference duals on Tuesday with a 5-2 victory at Lubbock Christian. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Midwestern State is 4-2 at home this season and is 3-0 when hosting WNMU.

The Maroon and Gold leads the all-time series, 8-1, and has won its last six encounters with the Mustangs from Silver City, New Mexico. MSU scored a 6-1 victory at WNMU last season. WNMU earned its only win over MSU in 2017 with a 5-4 victory at home.

Midwestern State has won 10 of its 12 singles matches during conference duals and won five of its six singles matches at Lubbock Christian on Tuesday, including four three-set matches.

Luis Diaz Argente defeated 13th-ranked Martins Abamu of Lubbock Christian, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, and improved to 7-8 in singles overall this season. Diaz has made 11 straight starts at the No. 1 position in singles and has won two of his last three matches.

Charles Heffernan improved to 5-4 in the No. 2 singles position with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Kelly Giese at Lubbock Christian on Tuesday. Heffernan is 2-0 in LSC matches and is 3-2 at home this season. Heffernan lost to Patricio Larrea in a super tiebreak at WNMU Tennis Courts last season.

Marcal Miret Avante has a four-match winning streak for the Mustangs after he pulled out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Herman Aguirre of Lubbock Christian. Miret has won both of his matches against conference opponents. Miret is 3-1 against regionally ranked opponents this season.

Midwestern State is 12-4 at No. 4 singles, and Germano Setti is responsible for eight of those victories. Setti rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Nikita Deev at Lubbock Christian, fighting off two match points en route to the triumph. Setti is 10-6 overall in singles and has won twice in conference duals.

Killian Guillou won his seventh consecutive singles match to start the season — and MSU improved to 7-3 at No. 5 singles — with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sabri Laphitz of Lubbock Christian. Guillou defeated Jake Frayniarz of St. Mary's at No. 6 singles on Feb. 25 and is 2-0 against conference opponents. The freshman from Paris, France, has won all three of his singles matches at home this season.

Stephen Slocombe had a three-match winning streak snapped in Lubbock on Tuesday as he lost a super tiebreak to Braden Tipton of LCU, and the Mustangs fell to 8-1 at No. 6 singles this season. Slocombe is 3-1 in singles matches overall.

Midwestern State is 25-20 in doubles this year, led by Diaz. The senior from Madrid, Spain, is 10-5 in doubles this season and has won four of his last five doubles matches. Diaz is 9-5 when paired with Juan David Duque but won his last match alongside Slocombe. Diaz and Slocombe defeated Deev and Alex Donnelly in Lubbock on Tuesday, 7-5.

Heffernan is 5-5 in doubles matches this season. Guillou is 6-6 and Setti is 7-7 in doubles.

Slocombe has played with three different partners — including Heffernan and Guillou — and is 6-5 in doubles matches for the Mustangs.

Western New Mexico is coming off a 6-1 loss to Cameron on Saturday as Brendan Lock earned the only point for the WNMU Mustangs with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 victory at No. 5 singles. The other five singles matches were lost in straight sets, and Cameron swept doubles to secure the first point of the day. WNMU is 2-3 conference duals this season with wins over Dallas Baptist and Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Freshman Lachlan Rowing is 5-7 in singles for WNMU but boasts a 4-1 record at No. 1 singles. Rowing has lost all four matches against LSC foes and is 0-6 at No. 2 singles.

WNMU is 2-10 at No. 2 singles this season. Larrea and Jhe Yu Du have the two victories.

Du is 2-7 at No. 3 singles, and the WNMU Mustangs are 4-8 in the No. 3 position this season.

Lock has a four-match winning streak in singles and has won three of his four matches against conference opponents. Lock is 8-2 overall this season with a 4-0 record at No. 4 singles.

WNMU is 13-20 in doubles matches this season. The Mustangs from Silver City have only won three of their 11 matches at No. 1 doubles this year.
