No. 4 UT Tyler sweeps past Mustangs

TYLER, Texas -- No. 4-ranked UT Tyler completed a three-game sweep of Midwestern State by winning both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at Erwin Ballpark.

The Patriots won the opener 11-0 in five innings before finishing off the nightcap, 7-0.

UT Tyler improved to 28-4 on the season and to 16-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Mustangs fell to 3-25 and 2-19.

Game 1 | UT Tyler 11, Midwestern State 0 (5 innings)

UT Tyler senior Shea O'Leary weaved a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and the Patriots erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning to a roll to an 11-0 run-rule win over Midwestern State in Game No. 1.

O'Leary, a graduate transfer from the University of Texas, logged her first shutout of the season after pitching 13 shutouts over four seasons for the Longhorns.

Junior Grace Martinez provided the Mustangs' lone hit of the game when she reached on a one-out single on a lined shot off of the third baseman's glove in the first inning.

Midwestern State's Zoe Isom, Christine Billmeier, and Levi Luna combined to limit UT Tyler to an opponent season-low three hits, but conceded 10 walks and a hit batsman to provide plenty of traffic for the Patriots.

UT Tyler needed just two hits to fuel a nine-run fourth inning scoring directly off of two wild pitches, two bases loaded walks, a bases loaded hit batsman, an error, and a sacrifice fly before Avery Farr laced a two-run single through the left side of the infield to cap the inning.

UT Tyler's Courtney Plocheck drove in three runs without benefit of a hit delivering the first two runs on RBI ground outs to second base in the first and third innings, before pushing another across when she was hit by a pitch in the fourth.

Farr also drove in three runs, while sophomore JT Smith drew three walks, stole three bases, and scored three runs.

Isom (1-3) took the loss for the Mustangs allowing eight runs -- one earned -- on two hits in 3 2/3 innings. She issued seven walks and hit a batter.

Game 2 | UT Tyler 7, Midwestern State 0

UT Tyler's Tatum Goff and Kaylee Davis combined to shut out Midwestern State for the third consecutive game, while JT Smith delivered three hits and hit a homer to lift the Patriots to a 7-0 win over Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference series finale.

Goff pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball recording five strikeouts while allowing six hits a day after logging 12 strikeouts in a five-inning no-hitter. The junior from Rusk remained perfect in the circle by improving to 18-0.

Sophomore Kaylee Davis earned her second save of the season coming on to pitch 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Smith launched her sixth homer of the season with a lead-off blast over the right-field wall, then capped off a four-run sixth inning with an RBI-single up the middle.

UT Tyler sophomore Sam Schott added a two-run double to the left-field gap in the third inning before opening the four-run sixth with a run-scoring groundout. This came a day after connecting for her second grand slam in the series opener.

Midwestern State turned up the defense to help its pitching staff strand 13 runners which included a pair of bases loaded lineouts to first baseman Lexi Mills to end a threat in the third inning, then to shortstop Chloe Bryant in the sixth.

Sophomore Sydney Shimkus led the Mustangs' seven-hit attack by going 2-for-3 for her fourth multiple-hit game of the season including her first extra-base hit of the season on a lead-off double to the left-field gap in the fourth inning.

Grace Martinez, Paige Bryant, Allie Monroe, Maegan Shannon, and Levi Luna also had hits for Midwestern State.

Luna (0-2) took the loss in the circle allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings before giving way to Kennedy Cameron, who allowed four runs -- two earned -- on two hits with six walks over the final three innings.

UP NEXT | Midwestern State takes on East Central (Okla.) in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field in Ada. First pitches are slated for 2 and 4 p.m.
