Scoring drought ends, but Mustangs are swept at East Central

ADA, Oklahoma -- Sydney Shimkus blasted a fourth-inning homer in the second game of a doubleheader as Midwestern State ended a 32-inning scoring drought, but East Central swept the twin bill at Tiger Field, winning the opener Tuesday afternoon 6-0 and taking the nightcap 10-2 in a five-inning, run-rule game.

Game 1 | East Central 6, Midwestern State 0

East Central senior pitcher Taia Harris struck out 14 Mustangs and threw 6 1/3 no-hit innings until Allie Monroe delivered a base hit up the middle in the seventh inning for Midwestern State.

Harris threw her third consecutive complete game and second shutout of the season as the Tigers won the opening game of the doubleheader at Tiger Field, 6-0.

Grace Martinez led off the game for MSU with a soft liner to shortstop, and Harris set the tone by striking out the next five batters she faced. Harris improved to 3-1 and faced just 24 batters through seven innings.

Kennedy Cameron started in the circle for Midwestern State and labored through five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts, three walks and four hit batsman. Only three of the runs charged to Cameron were earned.

Freshman Elyse LeClair scored in each of the first two innings to give East Central an early 2-0 lead. LeClair doubled and scored on an error in the first inning. Megan Lesko drove LeClair home in the second inning with a base hit up the middle.

Gabi Quinton singled up the middle to plate LeClair in the fourth inning as the Tigers took a 3-0 lead.

Rachelle Mengwasser homered to left field in the fifth inning. Cheyenne Adair was the next batter and drew a four-pitch walk before stealing second for the Tigers. Adair scored on Jayna Reid's base hit to right field.

Sydney Gonzales relieved Cameron in the sixth and walked Kenzie Lasker on four pitches. Two wild pitches allowed Lasker to reach third base. Adair grounded out to second, driving in Lasker for the final run of the game.

Cameron made her eighth start of the season for MSU and fell to 1-6. Gonzales worked an inning in relief and allowed one earned run while walking three Tigers.

Game 2 | East Central 10, Midwestern State 2 (5 innings)

Zoe Isom started the nightcap for the Mustangs and allowed eight runs on nine hits with two walks and a wild pitch.

Three of the hits were doubles, including Elyse LeClair's leadoff double to left in the first inning. LeClair advanced to third and scored the first run of the game on a throwing error.

East Central added two more runs in the second inning, when Josi Goodman drove home Jami Watson with a double, and LeClair drove in Adrianna Swann with a base hit to center field.

After Gabi Quintanilla brought home Megan Lesko with a base hit in the fourth inning, Midwestern State began slugging its way back into the game.

Shimkus hit her first home run of the season, and registered her fifth RBI of the campaign as the sophomore pulled a 2-2 offering from ECU starting pitcher Taryn O'Brien over the left-center field fence to put the Mustangs on the board.

Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, sophomore Madisen Mann hit her second homer of the year in the fifth inning. Mann made her seventh start of the season in right field and is 2 for 17 with two home runs and three RBIs for the Mustangs.

The Tigers ended the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Watson delivered a two-run single off Isom, who was replaced in the circle by Christine Billmeier with East Central leading 6-2. Isom gave up six earned runs in the outing.

Miranda Garza doubled to center field, scoring Jayna Reid and Watson to give the Tigers an 8-2 lead.

Vanessa Tamayo scored on a fielder's choice, and the game ended when Cara Duncan slid home on a wild pitch.

Isom made her fourth start in the circle for the Mustangs and fell to 1-4 for the season. O'Brien worked five innings and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out a season-high seven batters and walking one for the Tigers. O'Brien improved her record to 5-7.

East Central has a three-game winning streak and has won five of its last six games. The Tigers are 13-13 this season with a 6-3 record at home.

Midwestern State suffered its sixth consecutive loss and fell to 3-27 for the season. The Mustangs are winless in 14 road games this year.
