Mustangs fall to Southeastern Oklahoma in season opener

YOUNGSVILLE, La. -- Southeastern Oklahoma cashed in on 11 walks and six wild pitches to beat Midwestern State 12-1 in a run-rule in five innings Friday afternoon at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Southeastern Oklahoma scored two runs in each of the first three innings before taking advantage of a fielding error, four walks, and two wild pitches to plate six runs in the top of the fifth.

SOSU senior Alexis Massie delivered a two-run single to left field to give the Savage Storm a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Junior catcher Sabetha Sands ripped a triple down the right-field line to score Gracie Ore to fuel Southeastern's two-run third. Ore had reached on a double down the right-field line to lead off the inning.

Midwestern State used two extra-base hits to break up the shutout bid in the fourth. Freshman Megan Ayala stroked a double to left field then came into score on Kayla Bryant's triple to right.

- Midwestern State's Kayla Bryant went 2-for-2 and drove in the Mustangs' only run with a triple in the fourth inning.
- MSU freshman Megan Ayala reached in her first two plate appearances by drawing a walk in the second and leading off with a double in the fourth. She scored the Mustangs only run of the game.
- Junior Christine Billmeier came on to pitch a scoreless inning of relief in the fifth inning.
- Junior Gracie Ore went 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run to lead Southwestern Oklahoma's nine-hit attack.
- SOSU senior Cheyenne Mahy drew four walks and scored two runs.
- Junior Reese Taylor allowed one run on four hits in a five-inning complete game to earn the win for the Savage Storm. She recorded two strikeouts and walked one.

- Midwestern State lost its fourth-straight season opener and fell to 11-7 all-time in lid lifters.
- Midwestern State matched a single-game record by issuing 11 walks. MSU also recorded 11 walks against Eastern New Mexico in 2010, Pittsburg State in 2020, and Missouri Southern in 2022.
- Southeastern Oklahoma scored four of its 12 runs directly off of wild pitches.
- Southeastern Oklahoma State claimed its fifth straight win against MSU, but the Mustangs lead the overall series, 23-21.
