WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State rolled to a 6-1 win over St. Mary's in its Lone Star Conference opener Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 6-3 on the season including five wins against six NCAA Division II opponents.
MSU got off to a strong start by sweeping doubles play ignited by a 6-1 win by
Charles Heffernan and
Killian Guillou over Sebastian Azcui and Aaron Anton at the No. 3 position.
Moments later,
Juan David Duque and
Luis Diaz Argente clinched the opening point with a 6-2 victory over Nicolas Llosa and Jake Faryniarz at No. 2.
Germano Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante finished off the sweep with a 6-2 win over Ryan Koth and Oskar Irdoja at No. 1.
The Mustangs quickly took control of singles play, as well.
Duque was well on his way to a straight-set win at the No. 5 position holding a 6-2, 4-1 advantage when Llosa was forced to retire due to injury.
Freshman
Killian Guillou pushed the Mustangs to a 3-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Faryniarz at No. 6, before sophomore
Marcal Miret Avante clinched the outcome with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Koth at No. 3 singles.
MSU senior
Charles Heffernan took a first-set tiebreaker at 7-5, then coasted to take the second set 6-1 over Daniel Baldor at No. 2, while freshman
Germano Setti split sets at 6-2 with Irdoja at the No. 4 position before taking the match 10-7 in a super tiebreak.
St. Mary's sophomore Alvaro Soler averted the shutout with a 6-4, 6-2 win over
Luis Diaz Argente at No. 1 singles.
Midwestern State returns to action Friday afternoon against Southwest Baptist. First serve at the MSU Tennis Center is set for 2 p.m.
St. Mary's fell to 5-3 on the season and to 0-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
