WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State earned its third consecutive victory on Friday with a 7-0 win over Southwest Baptist at MSU Tennis Center. The Mustangs improved their season record to 7-3.
Germano Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 7-5 victory over Marcio Silva and Makary Adamek. The other two doubles matches were decided in tiebreaks.
Charles Heffernan and Killian Gillou were first off the court after a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Mikar Fisher and Ilyes Khelifi at No. 3 doubles. Alvaro Nunez and Youssef Nabil edged
Luis Diaz Argente and
Juan David Duque at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-5).
After dropping his first singles set at love, Heffernan came storming back at No. 2 singles to defeat Nabil, 0-6, 6-1, 6-0. The win assured Midwestern State its 16th triumph over Southwest Baptist in 23 meetings. The Mustangs have won their last four encounters with the Bearcats, who are 4-4 this season.
Marcal Miret Avante won in straight sets for the second consecutive time, defeating Silva at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Miret Avante improved to 6-3 for the season and 3-3 at the No. 3 position.
Setti won his fourth straight match at No. 4 singles, waltzing past Nunez, 6-1, 6-2. Setti is 7-3 in singles with a 5-1 record at No. 4 position.
Despite winning the first set 6-0, Diaz Argente was forced into a third set by Adamek at No. 1 singles. Diaz Argente won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Diaz Argente improved to 2-3 at No. 1 singles and is 5-5 overall in singles this season.
Duque posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fisher at No. 5 singles, and
Killian Guillou cruised past Khelifi at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Duque is 4-2 in singles this season, Guillou remains undefeated in singles with six consecutive wins for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State returns to MSU Tennis Center on Saturday morning to face Ouachita Baptist. The first ball will be struck in anger at 9 a.m.
