No. 9 Lubbock Christian sweeps past Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Freshmen Kayla Bryant collected hits in both ends of Midwestern State's doubleheader against No. 9-ranked Lubbock Christian Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

But it wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Chaps who completed the sweep of the midweek Lone Star Conference series by taking both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 9-4 and 9-0 in six innings.

Midwestern State (1-12, 0-6 LSC) hits the road to take on Cameron for a three-game set this weekend at McMahon Field. The Mustangs and Aggies play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. before playing a single game on Sunday at 2.

GAME 1 | Lubbock Christian 9, Midwestern State 4

Midwestern State kept it close by scoring runs in the first three innings in Game 1, but Lubbock Christian's Kasey Flores had two hits with a homer and a double while driving in five runs.

The Mustangs scored on consecutive doubles in the first inning by Kayla Bryant and Lexi Mills in the first inning and scored on an error in the second, then Paige Bryant scored when Sydney Shimkus laid down a sacrifice bunt in the third.

MSU added a fourth run in the sixth inning on Allie Monroe's double to left field.

But Flores carried the day for the Lady Chaps with a three-run homer in the first and an RBI-double in the third then drove in a run when she reached on an error in the seventh.

LCU senior Maxine Valdez improved to 5-1 in the circle allowing two earned runs on six hits in the complete-game victory. She recorded eight strikeouts.

Midwestern State junior Christine Billmeier allowed three runs on four hits in four solid innings of relief before giving way to freshman Sydney Gonzalez, who pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

MSU starter Kennedy Cameron took the loss for the Mustangs to fall to 1-3.

Mills and Monroe paced MSU's six-hit attack with two hits each, while Kayla Bryant and Jessika Roberts also accounted for hits.

All but one of the Mustangs' six hits were doubles.

GAME 2 | Lubbock Christian 9, Midwestern State 0 (6 innings)

Lubbock Christian put up a pair of big innings scoring five times in the fourth and four times in the sixth to run-rule Midwestern State 9-0 in six innings.

LCU's Riley Lunsford drilled a two-run homer to center field to put the Lady Chaps on the board in the fourth inning, then Amanda Valdeviezo launched a three-run blast to push the lead to 5-0.

Lubbock Christian's Hope Banales' two-run double capped a four-run sixth after Valdeviezo sent a run-scoring single up the middle and Skylar Herrera drove in another run on a sacrafice fly to center field.

Valdeviezo paced the Lady Chaps' nine-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Banales and Lunsford also drove in a pair of runs each.

Freshman Kayla Bryant dribbled a single up the middle in the third, and Chloe Bryant drilled a double to center field in the fifth to account for MSU's two hits.

Lubbock Christian freshman Ashlinn Hamilton earned her third win in the circle by pitching three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief with three strikeouts.
