CYPRESS, Texas -- Midwestern State couldn't quite shake off the rust of a long layoff and ended up in 10th place Tuesday in The Southern Invitational at Cypresswood Country Club.

"We struggled in every facet today. We just weren't quite ready after the winter break, but we don't have much time to worry about it," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "We just really didn't play well in any round. I don't think that will be the norm, but just something that happens in golf."

The Mustangs finished the first tournament of the spring semester with a 30-over team total of one 318. The number compare well to a tournament field with eights team ranked in the GolfStat Top 50.

MSU closed with a 71-over, 54-hole total of 935.

"We struggled more on the greens and around them than we did off of the tee," Ray said. "We're young, so we ought to learn from this. Hopefully, we will regroup and do better next week."

Freshman Tristan Gabbard tied for 28th carding scores of 76, 73, and 79 for a 12-over, three-round total of 228 to lead the Mustangs.

Sophomores Makenna Henry (75-79-81) and Brecklyn Flanagan (80-76-79) tied for 46th with matching 54-hole total of a 235.

Freshman Kodi Nolen placed 54th firing scores of 80, 79, and 78 for a 21-over total of 237, while senior Beatrice Perucchini (83-83-81) tied for 70th with a 31-over total of 247.

Freshman Alli Reily tied for 41st playing as an individual medalist only. The Pottsboro native recorded scores of 80, 75, and 79 for an 18-over total of 247.

No. 1-ranked Dallas Baptist claimed top team honors finishing with a 15-over, 54-hole total of 879 to win by three strokes over No. 7-ranked West Texas A&M.

DBU sophomore Jordan Karrh won top individual honors carding scores of 73, 71, and 72 for an even-par total of 216 edging Rogers State's Lydia Sitorus and teammates Olivia Mitchell by two strokes.

Midwestern State competes in the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.
