THACKERVILLE, Okla. – Midwestern State has three players among the top 11 after two rounds of the WinStar Invitational, and the Mustangs are fourth on the team leaderboard at 22-over 598 after shooting 15-over 303 in the second round on the Scissortail course at WinStar Golf Club on Monday.
The Mustangs are 31 strokes behind Dallas Baptist, which sits atop the leaderboard and leads St. Mary's by six strokes entering the final round on Tuesday. Madison Ube is leading the field at 6-under 142 through 36 holes and has a three stroke lead over Emma Thompson of Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Mia Hammerschmid of West Texas A&M and Gracie Grant of DBU are the only other players in red figures at 2-under 142. Ella Cheek of DBU is even-par and alone in fifth place.
Mary Kerr is in a three-way for eighth place at 3-over 147 after shooting 1-over 73 in the second round. Kerr had four birdies with her first coming on the 502-yard par-5 ninth hole. The junior from Friendswood, Texas, added three more birdies on the back nine and came in at even-par 36 after shooting 1-over on the front nine.
Kaetie Samuels and
Romane Lacoste are in a four-way tie for 11th place at 4-over 148. Samuels went out at even-par after carding two birdies on the front-nine and finished 3-over 75 with one birdie on the back nine. The sophomore from Flower Mound, Texas, had three consecutive bogies before finishing with back-to-back pars.
Lacoste strung together nine consecutive pars to start her day and birdied the 308-yard par-4 10th hole, but the senior from France shot 5-over 41 on the back nine to finish the round at five-over 77 after shooting 1-under 71 on Sunday.
Madison Wert shot 6-over 78 and did not have a birdie during her second round until the par-4 384-yard 18th hole, which she double-bogied on Sunday. The senior from Roanoke moved up four spots to 50th place at 19-over 163 through two rounds.
Emme Darnold had her only birdie of the day on the 190-yard par-3 eighth hole after back-to-back double bogies early in her round. Darnold shot 5-over on the back nine and finished the round at 8-over 80. Darnold fell 11 spots to 40th place after shooting 5-over 77 on Sunday.
Kinley Pessel, a senior transfer from LeTourneau, opened her second round with a birdie on the first hole but finished the round at 8-over 80, matching her score from the first round on Sunday. Pessel fell five spots on the leaderboard and is tied for 45th entering the final round.
Samantha Truong is playing as an individual and finished the second round with a 6-over 78. The sophomore from Pearland, Texas, is tied for 31st place at 10-over 154.
The final 18 holes are scheduled to be played on Thursday morning.
