Mustangs fall in overtime at Texas A&M International

THE LEAD >>>

LAREDO, Texas -- Natalie Stice's 3-pointer from the top of the key with one second remaining in regulation forced overtime Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Center.

But Texas A&M International took control by scoring seven consecutive points in the extra frame to hold off Midwestern State, 88-85.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Midwestern State outscored Texas A&M International in each of the first three periods Saturday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Center.

The Mustangs extended the lead to 10 after scoring the first six points fueled by consecutive layups by Natalie Stice and a pair of free throws by Mandy Withey to go up 57-47 with 8:37 to play.

But Texas A&M International responded with an 11-0 culminated by a three-point play by sophomore Barbara Turkalj as the Dustdevils claimed a 58-57 with 6:17 to play.

Then, Midwestern State received a huge break when TAMIU leading scorer Rai Brown was disqualified after receiving her fifth foul on a made layup by MSU freshman Dyamon Griggs with 6:01 to play.

Brown scored a game-high 28 points going 10-of-21 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe, but the Dustdevils would have to make do without their leading scorer.


TAMIU scored the next four points to control of the game and led by three points with four seconds to play following a pair of Emily Swiercz free throws.

But Stice muscled her way to the top of the to hit a game-tying 3-pointer with a just a second remaining.

Texas A&M International scored five points on one possession a minute into overtime following an intentional foul by MSU's Shawnisay Millar. Swiercz buried 3-pointer after hitting two free throws, then Turkalj found space in the paint for a layup as the Dustdevils took a seven-point lead with 2:50 to play.
 

THE LEADERS >>>

- Midwestern State senior Sheridan Bostic buried four 3-pointers to finish with a season-high 18 points.
- Freshman Dyamon Griggs recorded her 10th double-double of the season finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds. in 31 minutes off of the bench.
- Senior Shawnisay Millar battled her way to 15 points going 3-for-4 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. It was her third double-digit performance in the last four games and fifth of the season.
- Senior Eternity Jackson dished out a career-high seven assists.
- Texas A&M International's Rai Brown scored at least 20 points in her third-straight game and for the 14th time this season. The senior from Wheatley Heights, N.Y. poured in 28 points to go along with six rebounds, and five steals in 30 minutes.
 

GAME NOTES >>>

- Midwestern State fell to 2-2 in overtime games this season. The Mustangs own OT wins over St. Mary's and Oklahoma Christian and a loss to St. Edward's.
- The Mustangs have lost eight consecutive games for the first time since losing nine-straight from Nov. 21, 2015-Jan. 6, 2016.
- MSU fell to 5-22 on the season and 3-18 in Lone Star Conference play.
- The Mustangs dropped their 10th consecutive game on the road.
- Texas A&M International snapped a six-game slide to improve to 13-15.
