TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State begins a busy weekend with a showdown with NJCAA No. 3-ranked Tyler Junior College Friday afternoon at Joann Medlock Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
The Mustangs close the weekend by playing Cowley College (Kan.) and Collin College (Texas) Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS | Midwestern State received votes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II preseason rankings. The Mustangs leveled their season record at 2-2 with a 5-0 sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center. Playing without two-time All-Lone Star Conference performer
Anda Ghinga, the Mustangs dropped two of three matches during a season opening trip to Kearney, Nebraska. MSU sandwiched a pair of 4-2 defeats to Nebraska-Kearney and Augustana around a 4-1 win over MSU Denver.

Anda Ghinga is the lone Midwestern State player carrying a singles ranking coming in at No. 45 nationally and at No. 6 in the South Central Region rankings. The Mustangs boast three doubles in the South Central Region rankings including
Skylar Minns and
Micaela McSpadden at No. 2,
Emilija Visic and
Hannah Yip at No. 7, and
Alice Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani at No. 10.
STRENGTH IN DOUBLES | Midwestern State boasts a combined 8-3 doubles record through three dual matches this spring.
Amelia Lawson and
Sydney Williams are 2-1 at No. 1, while
Alice Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani are combined 3-0 with two victories at No. 3 and one at No. 2. ITA South Central Region finalists
Skylar Minns and
Micaela McSpadden are 2-0 at No. 3.
UNBEATEN MINNS | Junior
Skylar Minns remains unbeaten in singles play claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney's Merci Hood at No. 6 in the season opener before taking down Augustana's Margarita Chouliara 6-1, 6-2 also at No. 6. She was up a set in her match against MSU Denver and had an early break against Southeastern Oklahoma when both matches were abandoned. Minns is 37-17 (.685) since the start of the 2022 season in singles play.
SCOUTING THE APACHES |Tyler Junior College is ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association junior college rankings. The Apaches boast four players ranked in the ITA National Singles Rankings including Zoi Spyrou at No. 7, Yeva Kramarova at No. 14, Kelly Arends at No. 18, and Yeva Kononovych at No. 26. TJC also possesses three national ranked doubles sides including Kramarova and Kononovych at No. 5, Spyrou and Beyza Yaniklar at No. 12, and Arends and Hrudaya Shah at No. 22.
