Mustangs rally late at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Texas A&M-Kingsville's Jayde Tschritter found openings in the Midwestern State zone Thursday night at Steinke Center burying seven 3-points to finish with a game-high 25 points lifting the Javelinas to an 82-72 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Hot-shooting Texas A&M-Kingsville scored 14 consecutive points in the second quarter powered by 3-pointers by Mia Rivers and Jayde Tschritter as the Javelinas extended their lead to 35-21 following a pair of free throws by Janessa Payne with 2:34 to play in the opening half.

The Hoggies expanded the lead to 17 when Tschritter canned her seventh triple of the game with 6:32 remaining in the game.

But Midwestern State battled back with a 12-2 run in the closing minutes powered by two 3-pointers by Natalie Stice and another by Eternity Jackson, while Dyamon Griggs added a traditional three-point play to pull the Mustangs to within 76-72 with 57 seconds to play.
Texas A&M-Kingsville converted 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to push the lead back to double figures.

- Midwestern State senior Mandy Withey scored a career-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. She also grabbed six rebounds.
- MSU freshman Dyamon Griggs notched her eighth double-double of the season finishing with 23 points and a season-high 17 rebounds.
- Griggs became the first freshman in program history to score 20 points in five games.
- MSU junior Natalie Stice chipped in 15 points and knocked three 3-pointers while making two steals. Stice has scored 10-or-more points in 17 games this season.
- Texas A&M-Kingsville sophomore Jayde Tschritter poured in a game-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting with seven 3-pointers.
- TAMUK senior Brianna Pena knocked down three 3-pointers to chip in 18 points for the Javelinas. She also dished out six assists.

- Midwestern State lost its seventh-straight game to fall to 5-21 on the season and 3-17 in Lone Star Conference play.
- The Mustangs have lost 10 consecutive games on the road after beating UC Colorado Springs 80-72 on Nov. 12.
- MSU's seven-game slide is the longest since losing seven straight from Nov. 19-Dec. 19, 2016.
- Texas A&M-Kingsville matched a season-high 12 made 3-pointers while shooting a campaign-best 50 percent from beyond the arc.
- The Javelinas wone their fourth-straight home game to improve to 7-4 this season at Steinke Center.
- TAMUK has won the last three games of the series and four of the last five, but Midwestern State holds a 29-21 all-time edge over the Javelinas.
