WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State hosts UT Tyler for a Lone Star Conference clash at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Mustangs (0-7) are coming off a 90-72 loss to Texas Woman's on Thursday night. Fifth-year senior Ketisa Amos scored in double figures for her fifth consecutive game after missing the last two due to injury. She finished with 17 points on 8-of-17 shooting with four rebounds and two steals. Junior guard
Nikki Green used an eight-point explosion in the second quarter to score a season-high 17 points. Fifth-year senior
Makayla Coy notched double-figure points for the third time in the last four games, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Amos is the leading scorer for the Mustangs this season with 17.4 points per game. Amos is also averaging 6.4 rebounds per game and leads the team in steals with 11.
Carter is averaging 13.3 points per game and is leading the conference with 10.1 rebounds per game. Carter had 34 points and 18 rebounds in a 102-84 loss to Adams State on Nov. 11.
Coy is scoring 11.1 points per game and grabbing 7.4 rebounds per game, which is ninth-most in the LSC. The fifth-year senior from Jarrell, Texas, scored 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 68-57 loss to Tampa at the Rambelles Classic in San Angelo.
The Mustangs are shooting 32.7 percent from the field overall, and from 3-point range they are shooting 20.4 percent (29-of-142).
Midwestern State is shooting 67.7 percent from the free-throw line and is second in the conference with 22.4 free-throw attempts per game. Midwestern State is fifth in the conference with 15 free throws made per game.
MSU leads the LSC and is 15th in the nation with 17.1 offensive rebounds per game, and the team is fifth in the league with 38.71 total rebounds per game.
Midwestern State is scoring 64 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 85 points through the first seven games of the season.
Brenita Jackson is in her first season as the 12th head coach of the Mustangs' women's basketball program. Before coming to Midwestern State, Jackson was 52-13 in two seasons at Texas Wesleyan and was named Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year following both of her campaigns with the Rams.
UT Tyler (5-3) is coming off a 68-47 win over Cameron on Thursday night. Lavisa Hevinder was the leading scorer for the Patriots with 20 points, hitting 6 of 13 shots from beyond the arc. Tina Machalova finished with 14 points and four assists in the victory. Gabby Elliot was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line and scored 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
The Patriots have a three-game winning streak and are 2-1 on the road this season.
UT Tyler has won its last four meetings with the Mustangs, including a 91-79 victory last season. The Patriots are visiting MSU for the first time since December of 2021, when they scored a 55-50 victory. MSU leads the all-time series, 5-4, and is 4-1 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Patriots have the best scoring defense in the LSC and fifth-best in the nation, allowing just 50.6 points per game. Opponents are only shooting 34 percent against UT Tyler.
Machalova is the leading scorer for the Patriots with 12.8 points per game, and Gabby leads the team with 5.5 rebounds per game.
UT Tyler scores 69.6 points per game and has a plus-19 scoring margin.
Rebecca Alvidrez is 51-20 in her third season at UT Tyler. Alvidrez was 19-9 in her first season and led the Patriots to the Elite Eight last season and an overall record of 27-8.
Midwestern State travels to San Antonio for a showdown with St. Mary's on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
