SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Makayla Coy poured in 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to post her first double-double at Midwestern State, but the Mustangs suffered a 68-57 loss to Tampa at the Rambelles Classic on Friday afternoon.
Zarria Carter just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Coy was 8 of 10 from the field during the fourth quarter, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range and scored 21 points during the final period as MSU outscored the Spartans over the final 10 minutes, 26-16.
Coy surpassed her previous collegiate high when she was with Texas Wesleyan last season. She scored 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 104-87 win over Brewton-Parker in March. Coy was one point shy of the season-high for the Mustangs this season. Carter had a 34-point, 18-rebound performance against Adams State in a 102-84 loss on Nov. 11.
Midwestern State trailed No. 15-ranked Tampa at halftime, 28-22, but the Spartans pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring the Mustangs, 24-9. The Spartans led by as many as 23 points and outrebounded the Mustangs, 40-34.
Tampa shot 50 percent from the field and held MSU to 32.8 percent shooting for the game. In the fourth quarter, Midwestern State was 10 of 21 from the field and hit 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc.
Midwestern State missed its first 14 shots from 3-point range before
Kyla Speights knocked one down with 2:37 to play in the second quarter. Speights finished with nine points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field.
The Mustangs only committed eight turnovers and force 14. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers.
Mya Giusto, who had just two points at halftime, finished with a team-high 18 for the Spartans, who outscored the Mustangs in the paint, 40-20.
Midwestern State returns to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Saturday afternoon to face Missouri Southern, who lost to Angelo State on Friday, 80-61. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
