MSU stumbles at home in 79-72 loss to Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Oklahoma Christian shot 50 percent from the field, junior guard Drew Tennial led all scorers with 22 points, and the Eagles defeated Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 79-72.

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Tennial was 6 of 7 from the field and scored 14 points in the first half as OC established a 35-16 lead with 7:48 remaining in the first half.

Midwestern State was 8 of 25 from the field in the first half. Derrick Ogechi, Luke Hamilton and Marquis Davison were the leading scorers in the first half for the Mustangs with five points apiece.

Midwestern State turned the ball over 12 times in the opening 20 minutes, and the Eagles capitalized with 14 points off those turnovers.

Oklahoma Christian held a 47-23 halftime lead and outscored MSU in the paint over the first 20 minutes, 18-8.

Midwestern State outscored OC in the second half, 49-42, hitting 17 of 38 shots, including 6 of 17 from 3-point range. MSU finished the game shooting 39.7 percent from the field.

Jermane Carter was 6 of 11 from the field and scored 15 points in the second half.

Ogechi was 4 of 7 from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes on his way to 14 second-half points.

Ogechi hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in the game to bring MSU to within five points, but Tennial subsequently hit two free throws for Oklahoma Christian to close out the scoring.

Midwestern State was 14 of 25 from the free-throw line, and Oklahoma Christian hit 28 of 44 free throws en route to the victory.

Davison, Carter, Hamilton, and Mason Gibson all fouled out of the game for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State missed 10 of its 17 layups in the game.

MSU outrebounded OC, 42-34, but 15 offensive rebounds only led to nine second-chance points for the Mustangs.

- MSU senior Derrick Ogechi scored 19 points in the loss, scoring in double figures for the eighth time in nine games.

- MSU senior forward Jermane Carter also scored 19 points, scoring double figures for the eighth consecutive game and for the 14th time this season.

- Carter and Ogechi each grabbed nine rebounds for the Mustangs.

- MSU junior guard Pierre Sanders played 35 minutes and finished with 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field. Sanders was 5 of 6 from inside the arc.

- Tennial was one of four players in double figures for the Eagles. Karlyn Kenner poured in 18 points, hitting 10 of 12 free throws. Nyk Madison and Mount'Tae Edmunson each scored 11 points. Madison was 4 of 5 from the field, and Edmunson was 4 of 6.

- Tennial finished the game 10 of 14 at the free-throw line and was one of three Eagles with six rebounds. Kenner and D.J. Walter also had six rebounds apiece for OC.

GAME NOTES >>>

- Midwestern State saw a five-game home winning streak come to an end, and the Mustangs are 5-3 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season.

- Midwestern State is 9-10 overall with a 6-7 record in the Lone Star Conference.

- MSU leads the all-time series with OC, 27-15, but Eagles head coach Kendre Talley is 4-3 in four seasons against the Mustangs and won for the first time in three visits at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

- OC is 8-11 overall this season and improved to 4-9 in the Lone Star Conference.
