WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Lubbock Christian made its final three shots of the first half and its first five shots of the second half to pull away from Midwestern State in a 71-61 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED >>>
Lubbock Christian shot 51 percent from the field, hitting 27 of 53 shots. The Chaparrals held MSU to 34 percent shooting as the Mustangs hit just 21 of 61 shots. In the first half the Mustangs were 8 of 31 and trailed at halftime, 30-24.
Midwestern State made just 6 of 15 layups in the entire game and missed two layups in the opening 1:18 of the contest.
Jermane Carter was 2 of 10 in the first half, and
Marquis Davison finished the half 2 of 7. Carter and Davison each had six points to lead the Mustangs at halftime.
Lubbock Christian hit 13 of 30 shots in the first half, and Rowan Mackenzie led the way with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. The Chaparrals held a 30-24 lead at halftime.
Russell Harrison made a layup and hit a 3-pointer to start the second half. Kurt Wegscheider added a jump shot with 18:08 remaining, and Lubbock Christian extended its lead to 37-24, forcing Midwestern State to call a time out.
Lubbock Christian extended its lead to 16 points, 49-33, when Harrison made his second 3-pointer of the game with 12:03 remaining in the second half.
Midwestern State made 6 of 8 shots, including two 3-pointers from
Mason Gibson, to get back within six points and trailed 54-48 with 6:14 to play in the game.
Pierre Sanders scored five points in a 37-second span to bring the Mustangs within three points with 3:06 remaining as the Chaparrals led, 58-55.
Mackenzie hit a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to give Lubbock Christian a 61-56 lead with 2:36 to play.
Harrison buried his third 3-pointer with 1:17 remaining to give Lubbock Christian a 66-58 lead.
Lubbock Christian was 5 of 10 from beyond the arc in the second half and hit 14 of its 23 shots from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Midwestern State had 17 offensive rebounds but only scored five second-chance points in the game.
The Mustangs bench outscored the Chaparral reserves, 12-0.

- MSU senior forward
Jermane Carter scored 12 points, scoring double figures for the ninth consecutive game and for the 15th time this season.
- Carter also grabbed 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.
- MSU junior guard
Pierre Sanders dished out five of the 12 assists for the Mustangs and finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
- MSU freshman guard
Mason Gibson was 3 of 4 from 3-point range and scored nine points for the Mustangs, who were 8 of 25 from beyond the arc as a team.
- Mackenzie was the leading scorer in the game with 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting for Lubbock Christian. He also led the Chaparrals with 11 rebounds and six assists.
- Harrison hit 7 of 9 shots, including 3 of 5 from 3-point distance, and scored 17 points for Lubbock Christian.
- Najeeb Muhammad also had 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Chaparrals.

- Midwestern State has lost back-to-back games at home, and the Mustangs are 5-4 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season.
- Midwestern State is 9-11 overall with a 6-8 record in the Lone Star Conference.
