SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Midwestern State clubbed seven home runs in a doubleheader split with Western New Mexico here Sunday afternoon.
Hanna Hetherington belted three homers and
Mikey Dominguez had two, while
Ashley Turner and
Bailey Brenek accounted one in a combined 27-hit barrage over the two games.
MSU moved to 3-14 overall and 2-3 in Lone Star Conference play, while WNMU is now 2-15 and 1-3.
GAME 1 | Midwestern State 16, Western New Mexico 5 (6 innings)
Midwestern State erupted for 10 runs in the sixth inning to cruise to a 16-5 run-rule win over Western New Mexico Sunday afternoon at WNMU Field.
Freshman
Mikey Dominguez connected for her first collegiate home run on a two-blast, while sophomore
Hanna Hetherington culminated the inning with a solo shot as part of an eight-hit onslaught.
Hetherington opened the scoring in the frame with an RBI double to the left-field gap, then
Bailey Brenek plated one with a double of her own followed by
Sabrina Graf's two-run double of the Mustangs' first five runs of the frame.
Dominguez launched two-run homer to center field, then
Ashley Turner and
Daylan Inkman drove in runs before Hetherington's solo blast pushed MSU's lead to 16-4.
Midwestern State jumped out to an early lead with Brenek and Graf driving in runs during a three-run first inning.
Western New Mexico answered with single runs in the first and second innings before forging a 4-3 lead after Bree Simmons smacked her fourth homer of the year on a two-run shot in the third inning.
MSU's
Daylan Inkman leveled the game at 4-4 with an RBI single in the fourth.
The Mustangs regained the lead at 6-4 on Dominguez' two-run triple in the fifth inning.

Kennedy Cameron earned win to improve to 2-4 in the circle. She permitted four earned runs on six hits in six innings with a season-high 11 strikeouts.
GAME 2 | Western New Mexico 12, Midwestern State 10
Midwestern State sophomore
Hanna Hetherington hit two of the Mustangs' five home runs in Game 2 Sunday afternoon, but fell to Western New Mexico 12-10 at WNMU Field.
Nine of MSU's 10 runs came by way of the home run in the nightcap.
Hetherington blasted a three-run shot in the top of the third after freshman
Mikey Dominguez launched her second homer of the day to open scoring as the Mustangs took a 5-1 lead.
Western New Mexico put up three runs in the third and another in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the fifth inning.
Midwestern State erupted for five more runs in the fifth inning with
Ashley Turner drilling a solo homer to lead off the while following by a two-run blast by Hetherington before
Bailey Brenek drilled a two-run shot to right-center field to give the Mustangs a 10-5 advantage.
But WNMU used a six-run, four-hit attack highlighted by Bryana Munoz' two-run double to take an 11-10 lead, then added an insurance run in the sixth.
Western New Mexico's Vanessa Hunt earned her first win of the season in the circle allowing two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Sophomore
Addi Hanna (0-7) was saddled with the loss for MSU allowing seven runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
LEADERS
- Senior
Ashley Turner extended her current hitting streak to a season-best eight games by going 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two runs scored and an RBI. She improved her batting average to .446 and has reached base in each of her last 23 games dating back to last season.
- Sophomore
Hanna Hetherington went 2-for-3 with two homers and a season-high five RBIs. She connected on a homer in Game 1 and has a career-high four long balls this season.
- Freshman
Mikey Dominguez went 2-for-3 with her second home run of the day. She has two hits in each of her last three games.
- Senior
Daylan Inkman was 2-for-3 with an RBI to extend her hitting streak to four games. She is 6-for-14 (.429) during the stretch.
