WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- St. Mary's senior Abigale Carney blasted four home runs and freshman Cassidy Mageors belted a grand slam to lead the 25th-ranked Rattlers to a doubleheader sweep of Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Rattlers won Game 1 10-6 before taking the second game 10-1 in five innings to improve to 21-4 on the season while moving to 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
Midwestern State (3-16, 2-4 LSC) used a pair of solo home runs by sophomore
Hanna Hetherington in the first and third innings and a two-run double down the left-field line by
Lily Moron to tie the game at 4-4 in the third inning.
The took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after
Daylan Inkman led off with her first homer of the season before freshman
Mikey Dominguez delivered a two-out RBI single to put MSU up 6-5.
St. Mary's loaded the bases with one out in the top of the inning, but MSU starter
Kennedy Cameron appeared to be on verge of wiggling her way out of the jam by Tiffany Licon to ground into a fielder's choice to cut the leader runner down at the plate.
But Mageors drilled her 1-1 offering over the left-field fence for a grand slam as St. Mary's reclaimed a 9-6 lead. Carney tacked on an insurance run with a homer in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap fueled by Carney's third homer of the day -- a two-run shot to left field -- and a two-run double by Bari Christian.
The Rattlers plated two more runs in the second before Carney finished off her four-homer day with a solo shot to left field to highlight a three-run third inning as the St. Mary's surged to a 10-0 lead.
