WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Though
Marcal Miret Avante and
Charles Heffernan were able to secure singles wins, Midwestern State fell to No. 22 Washburn by 5-2 on Saturday. The Mustangs are 3-3 on the season.
The Ichabods went up first on doubles victories at the one and three spots. Matthew Earle and Sebastian Pjontek took a 6-4 win over
Brice Bradshaw and
Ben Westwick at the top line. Westwick and Bradshaw are 0-1 for the year.
Miquel Perez and Santiago Rendon secured a 6-2 score against Miret Avante and
Stephen Slocombe. The Mustang pair are 1-2 at the third line.
Stefan Andrei and
Quentin Scharfenberg clinched a 6-2 victory versus Raul-Alin Dicu and Noah Neideck at the No. 2 spot. This was the duo's first win together this season.
Westwick dropped his second straight-match with the 4-6, 5-7 defeat by Dicu at No. 1 singles. The junior is 2-1 from the top line and 2-3 for the year.
Bradshaw is 3-3 in singles play after posting a 3-6, 3-6 drop to Tim Hammes at the second spot.
Miret Avante overtook Pjontek at No. 3 by a 6-4, 6-4 score. The freshman remains undefeated for the season at 4-0, with two wins at the three and five lines.
No. 50 Andrei suffered his second third set loss of the week at the fourth spot. The freshman fell 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 to Perez to sit at 2-4 for the season.
Heffernan inked his second-straight No. 5 victory. The junior went 6-3, 6-1 over Earle for the Mustangs second point of the match. Heffernan is 4-1 in singles play this year.
Brandon Wall dropped his first singles battle with a 3-6, 1-6 score against Daniel Bird at No. 6. Wall is 2-1 with wins against McMurry and Oklahoma Wesleyan.
Midwestern State returns to play as they travel to Magnolia, Ark., next weekend. The Mustangs face Ouachita Baptist on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. MSU takes on Montevallo and Southern Arkansas in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. All matches will take place at Live Oak Tennis Courts.
