No. 44 Midwestern State takes 6-1 loss to No. 8 Ouachita Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Marcal Miret Avante continued his unbeaten run in singles play as he notched Midwestern State's solo point in their 6-1 loss to No. 8-ranked Ouachita Baptist Friday at the Ward Tennis Center.

The No. 2 doubles duo of Ben Westwick and Alex Martinez Roca started strong for MSU. They are 5-0 on the year after taking down No. 9 Francisco Oliveira and Santiago Kearney by 6-4. This is the first ranked opponent that Westwick and Martinez Roca toppled this season at the top doubles line.

Brice Bradshaw and Stefan Andrei sit at 2-2 after falling 6-4 to Fernando Docters and Tobias Fuerschuss at No. 2 doubles. Bradshaw is 3-4 in doubles play while Andrei is 3-3.

The battle at the third spot fell to the Tigers as Alex Blanchar and Phil Exner ousted Marcal Miret Avante and Stephen Slocombe by 7-6 on an 8-6 tiebreak. The Mustang duo are 1-3 for the year with Miret Avante holding an 3-4 overall doubles record and Slocombe going 1-3.

On the singles side, Andrei dropped his fourth straight match at No. 4. The freshman suffered a 0-6, 3-6 loss to Blanchar to hold a 2-5 record.

No. 26 ranked Kearney overtook Bradshaw at the second spot by 6-3, 6-1. The sophomore is 3-4 in overall singles play and 2-3 when playing at No. 2.

At the top spot, Westwick took a fall against No. 16 ranked Oliveira by a 3-6, 3-6 score. Westwick is 2-4 on the year and 2-2 from the No. 1 line.

Charles Heffernan tallied his first loss at the fifth position on a 5-7, 4-6 drop to Exner. The junior is 2-1 and 4-2 in all singles play.

Quentin Scharfenberg took a tough fall in his singles' debut of the season. The redshirt sophomore fell 2-6, 6-7 (3-7) to Fuerschuss at the No. 6 spot.

Miret Avante's three set victory at No. 3 concluded the match for MSU. Docters took the first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker. Miret Avante rebounded with a 6-2 score in the second set and finished with a 10-6 tiebreak. The freshman is 5-0 from the third and fifth spots.

Midwestern State continues play in Magnolia at the Live Oak Tennis Courts on Saturday, March 12. The Mustangs face Montevallo (Ala.) at 9 a.m. and No. 11 Southern Arkansas at 2 p.m.
