Mustangs salvage split at UT Permian Basin

Griffin clubs home runs in both games of doubleheader

ODESSA, Texas -- Senior Payton Griffin belted a pair of home runs including a three-run blast to culminate a five-run seventh inning in Game No. 2 Friday afternoon at the UTPB Softball as Midwestern State ended its 11-game slide.

The Mustangs earned a split falling to UT Permian Basin 3-2 in Game 1 before taking nightcap, 8-2.

MSU moved to 2-13 overall and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while went to 14-9 and 1-1.

Midwestern State scored all eight of its runs with two outs on the way snapping an 11-game losing streak with an 8-2 win over UT Permian Basin in Game 2 Friday night at the UTPB Softball Field.

The Mustangs struck for three runs with two outs in the second inning fueled by consecutive hits by Kerris Cameron and Ashley Turner.

Cameron dumped a two-run single to left field, the came around to score on Turner's fifth double of the season to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.

UTPB sophomore Mia Quintero struck for her fifth homer of the season to pull the Falcons to within a run at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

But MSU worked more two-out magic in the top of the seventh. Turner and Daylan Inkman struck for consecutive RBI doubles to right field before Hanna Hetherington drew a walk.

Payton Griffin belted the next pitch over the fence for a three-run homer to give the Mustangs a commanding 8-2 advantage.

Kennedy Cameron (1-4) earned the win for MSU allowing one run on two hits in four relief innings. She record five strikeouts to two walks.

Malea Rodriguez drew the start and permitted an unearned run on two hits in three innings before giving way to Kennedy.

LEADERS

- Junior Ashley Turner matched a season-high with three hits including a pair of doubles to extend her most recent hitting streak to six games. She has reached base in 21 straight games dating back to last season.
- Sophomore Bailey Brenek went 2-for-4 to produce her team-best eighth multiple-hit game of the campaign.
- Freshman Mikey Dominguez produced her second multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Senior Payton Griffin drilled her second home run of the day -- a three-run shot in the seventh. It was her fifth homer as a Mustang.
- Cynthia Ng (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season for UTPB. The freshman permitted three runs on seven this in 5 1/3 innings.

GAME 1 | UT Permian Basin 3, Midwestern State 2

UT Permian Basin struck for three runs in the opening two innings then held on for a 3-2 win over Midwestern State in Game 1 Friday afternoon at the UTPB Softball Field.

The Falcons scored a single run on a bases loaded walk in the first inning, then Aracely Araiza struck for a two-run double in the second to push the UT Permian Basin advantage to 3-0.

MSU sophomore Malea Rodriguez came on in relief and shutdown the UTPB attack allowing just one baserunner on a single hit in four innings and recorded three strikeouts.

Payton Griffin put the Mustangs on the board with a solo home run to left-field in the fourth inning, then the Mustangs added an unearned run in the sixth to pull within a run at 3-2.

But it wasn't enough to overcome a sterling performance by UTPB starter Destini Trahan, who held the Mustangs to two runs on six hits in a complete game victory. She notched four strikeouts to just one walk while improve to 5-2 in the circle.

Starting pitcher Addi Hanna (0-6) took the loss for the Mustangs allowing three runs on seven hits in two innings.

LEADERS

- Payton Griffin and Bailey Brenek paced MSU's six-hit attack accounted for two hits each. Griffin's solo homer in the fourth was her first of the year.
- Junior Ashley Turner wasted little time extended her hitting and on-base streaks with a leadoff single to left in the top of the first.
-Daylan Inkman led off the sixth inning with a pinch-hit single to right field, then had two hits in Game No. 2.

UP NEXT

Midwestern State battles Western New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Silver City. First pitches are set for noon and 2 p.m. (Central Time).
