TROPHY CLUB, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Jake Doggett needed to add a little variety for his preferred post-tournament celebration meal after winning the Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Invitational Tuesday afternoon at The Trophy Club's Whitworth Course.
Naturally, the Hutto, Texas native believes 'W's' stand for wins and Whataburger. And that usually means a patty melt.
But after conquering unrelenting winds and less than favorable course conditions with a clean card and three birdies, Doggett was ready for more poultry. So he ordered a buffalo ranch chicken strip sandwich.
Trips to Whataburger have become a staple for the Mustangs now that Doggett has tied former All-American
Derek Oland with fourth individual win of the season. It happened to come on the heels of Oland's All-Pro Tournament win at the Paragon Casino Championship earlier this week.
"It's huge (to win the fourth tournament of the year)," Doggett said. "You look at where (Derek)Â is now. Just to be in the category with someone that has been as successful as him. Hopefully, I can make a career like he has."
Doggett got off to a rough start during the resumption of play by going 3-over par on the final four holes of the second round but still managed to compile tallies of 68 and 71 through 36 holes.
He finished off the tournament with his 10th round in the 60s this season to close with an 8-under total of 208 to win by six strokes over Arkansas Tech's Francois Jacobs (71-72-71 214/-2).
"The weather was windy and cold. It was just a tough day," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "We had a great third round. He didn't make a bogey and that is fantastic in this weather."
Doggett continued a trend of playing at his best in the worst of weather conditions. He also logged a 7-under 65 in the final round of the MSU Invitational to close out a team and individual win.
"I don't know if it's more of a focus thing," he said. "It makes me pick out a spot and put a good swing. It's more about controlling your shot and have the confidence that you can pull it off."
Doggett, who also claimed wins at the season opening Writz at Mile High and last week at the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational, now has six career individual wins. Oland won nine times during his career including four during the 2013-14 season.
As a team, MSU surged to a runner-up finishes following tallies of 297 and 299 with its lowest total of 292 against adverse conditions in the final round. The Mustangs' 24-over total of 888 trailed only Arkansas Tech (871/+7).
Midwestern State received tournament-low scores from
Mason Mikeska (73) and
Ethen Wolf (75) to go along with Doggett's 69 and
Jake Leatherwood's 75 in the final round.
"Coach Ray always says we're a good bad weather team," Doggett said. "It's weird how you can do that. We may focus better, but it builds confidence to know that we've done it in the past."
Leatherwood, a junior from Snyder, polished off his fourth top 10 finish of the season logging scores of 74, 72 and 75 to tie for eighth with a 5-over total of 221, while junior
Garrett Leek (76-76-76) tied for 32nd with a 12-over 228.
Wolf (79-80-85) and Mikeska (80-85-73) tied for 45th and 63rd, respectively.
"We had our best round in the worst weather. It shows just how good this team can be," Ray said.
Midwestern State next competes in the King-Alfred Spring Invitational hosted by UT Tyler on March 28-29 at Eagle's Bluff Golf Course in Bullard.
