No. 1 UT Tyler overwhelms Midwestern State with big innings

Hetherington clubs 10th home run in Game 1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Two big innings fueled No. 1-ranked UT Tyler to a doubleheader sweep over Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Patriots put up 11 runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 15-5 win in Game 1, then plated nine runs in the second inning to take the nightcap 10-1 also in five innings.

UT Tyler extended its winning streak to 11 games to improve to 25-1 on the season and kept pace with Lubbock Christian and Texas A&M-Commerce at the top of the LSC standings at 11-1. Midwestern State dropped to 5-22 and 4-8.

GAME 1 | UT Tyler 15, Midwestern State 5 (5 innings)

UT Tyler sophomore Tatum Goff launched a three-run homer to left field as the Patriots drew first blood in the opener Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

But Midwestern State answered in the bottom of the frame with Hanna Hetherington's 10th home run of the season to pull the Mustangs within 3-2.

MSU took the lead in the fourth after Macy Sanders delivered a one-out single up the middle, then stole second. She came score on Daylan Inkman's RBI-double to the left-field gap. Senior Ashley Turner then thumped her sixth homer of the season over the left-field fence to give the Mustangs a 5-4 edge heading into the fifth.

But UT Tyler's Courtney Plocheck drilled a three-run homer to left-center to ignite an 11-run fifth inning for the Patriots. UTT sent 16 hitters to the plate which included two separate runs of six and seven consecutive Patriots reaching base.

Plocheck, who added a two-run double in the fifth inning, went 3-for-4 with five RBIS, while Hanna Fradkin was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Sarah Gartman (6-0) earned the win in relief allowing one earned run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Bailey Brenek, Peyton Lee and Maci Sanders accounted for two hits each for Midwestern State.

Malea Rodriguez (1-4) took the loss for the Mustangs allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

GAME 2 | UT Tyler 10, Midwestern State 1

Ashley Perez and Mak Dominguez clubbed home runs and UT Tyler erupted for nine runs in the second inning to roll to a 10-1 win over Midwestern State in Game 2 Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Perez drilled a solo shot down the left-field to open scoring in the first inning, the Dominguez clobbered a two-run homer down the left-field line to kick start the Patriots' second big inning of the day.

Ashley Marek and Michelle Arias also contributed two-run singles to highlight the nine-run second.

Midwestern State answered Perez' solo shot in the first inning by plating the tying run on Hanna Hetherington's RBI single down the third-base line in the bottom of the first before the Patriots took control of the game.

Marek, Plocheck and Arias had two hits each to pace UT Tyler's nine-hit attack, while Tatum Goff (3-0) earned the winning allowing one run on three hits in four innings.

Ashley Turner, Bailey Brenek and Hetherington accounted for three MSU hits while Kennedy Cameron (3-7) took the loss allowing five earned runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Sophomore Peyton Lee pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

NOTABLES

- Sophomore Hanna Hetherington became the 10th Midwestern State player to hit 10 home runs in a season and the first since Carli Woolsey hit 12 homers in 2019. Hetherington is tied for second in the Lone Star Conference.
- Junior Bailey Brenek notched her team-best 12th multiple-hit game of the season by going 2-for-3 in the opener against UT Tyler. She has now reached base in 14 consecutive games.
- Senior Ashley Turner clubbed her sixth home run of the season to drive in her career high 19th RBI in the fourth inning of Game 1.
- Sophomore Peyton Lee hit a team-best .435 (10-of-23) with two doubles in MSU's 10-game home stand. She also pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief during her first two appearances of the season in the circle.

Midwestern State hits the road for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Oklahoma Christian Friday night at Tom Heath Field in Oklahoma City. First pitches are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
