No. 13 Central Oklahoma squeezes past Mustangs in doubleheader sweep

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State just keeps coming close this season, but No. 13 Central Oklahoma was the latest to hold off the Mustangs in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Bronchos scored two runs in the top of the seventh to overtake MSU 6-5 in Game 1, then tacked on an insurance ran in the seventh inning to secure a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

Central Oklahoma extended its winning streak to 12 games to improve to 14-2, while MSU suffered its ninth and 10th straight losses to fall to 1-12.

GAME 1 | Central Oklahoma 6, Midwestern State 5

Amelya Huggins' RBI single through the left side of the infield competed a two-run rally all with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to lift Central Oklahoma to a 6-5 win in Game 1 Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The rally offset Midwestern State three-run sixth inning which staked the Mustangs to a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh.

Sophomore Bailey Brenek highlighted the uprising with a run-scoring triple on a bounding ball up the field which deflected off of a diving shortstop's glove and caromed away from the charging center fielder. Hanna Hetheringon sprinted home to tie the game at 4-4.

Pinch hitter Sabrina Graf followed with a double off of the end of that landed just inside the right-field line to score Brenek and give MSU a 5-4 lead.

LEADERS

- Sophomore Bailey Brenek produced her team-best sixth multiple-hit game of the year going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The sophomore put the Mustangs on the board with a two-run single in the fourth. The triple in the sixth inning was her second career three-bagger.
- Freshman Sabrina Graf delivered her first career pinch hit which was also her first double and run driven in the sixth inning.
- Junior Ashley Turner reached for the 18th consecutive game when she ripped a leadoff single to left field in the sixth inning. She came around to score on Payton Griffin's sacrifice bunt.
- Sophomore Addi Hanna fell to 0-4 in the circle allowing five earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings. It was her second complete game in four starts.
- Brighton Gilbert, Jacee Minter, Terin Ritz and Lexy Dobson accounted for two hits each for Central Oklahoma.
- UCO sophomore Kylee Lynch improved to 9-0 in the circle allowing five runs on six hits in the complete game victory. She had allowed a total of five runs over her previous 45 2/3 innings of work dating back to Feb. 7.

GAME 2 | Central Oklahoma 4, Midwestern State 2

Amelya Huggins drilled her second homer of the season in the second and laced a two-run single to left field in the sixth, while Jacee Minter drove two more runs to power Central Oklahoma to a 4-2 win over Midwestern State in Game 2 Wednesday night at Mustangs Park.

Midwestern State brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after Peyton Lee and Paige Bryant delivered consecutive one-out singles.

But the Mustangs were unable to cash in on the threat.

UCO starter Terin Ritz improved to 5-1 limiting the Mustangs to a pair of unearned runs on four hits while striking out eight.
