Midwestern State comeback efforts come up short against Embry-Riddle

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Mikey Dominguez crushed a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2, but Midwestern State's comeback efforts fell a run short Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Embry-Riddle (Fla.) swept MSU claiming a 10-2 win in the first game before surviving with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

The Mustangs fell to 5-18 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 10-6.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle 10, Midwestern State 2

Embry-Riddle struck for three runs in the first, second and fourth innings to roll to a 10-2 win over Midwestern State in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Mahaliyah Sandridge and Lia Johnson had three hits each operating out of the top two spots in the order as the Eagles closed the game with a season-high 16 hits.

Sandridge drilled a two-run triple to the right-field gap in the second inning, then capped the scoring with a solo home run to center field in the seventh. It was her and the team's second homer of the season.

Midwestern State freshman Peyton Lee accounted for three of the Mustangs' four hits and scored on an error in the fourth inning.

Bailey Brenek scored MSU's only other run on a wild pitch in the first inning after drawing a walk. She posted MSU's fourth hit on a single in the seventh.

Kelsi Collins (6-3) earned the win for Embry-Riddle holding the Mustangs to two runs on four hits in the complete game victory. She registered six strikeouts and two walks.

Katheryn Wells (1-2) took the loss for MSU allowing nine earned runs on 16 hits in seven innings.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle 6, Midwestern State 5

Embry-Riddle broke open a tie game with a two-out, four-run rally ignited after Lauren Latoria beat out an infield single to shortstop to plate the go ahead-run in a 6-5 win over Midwestern State Tuesday at Mustangs Park.

Karina Ortiz-Munoz followed with a smash down the left-field line just inside the bag at third base to drive in two more before Kelsey Kressler lined a triple down the right field line to chase in Ortiz-Munoz to give ERAU a 6-2 advantage.

But Midwestern State would rally in the bottom of the frame. Payton Griffin reached on an error before Kerris Cameron was hit by a pitch. Mikie Dominguez followed with her third homer of the season to pull the Mustangs within a run.

Ashley Turner kept MSU's hopes alive with a two-out double to the left-field gap and Bailey Brenek represented the winning run when she drew a walk.

But Embry-Riddle starter Mallory Kinahan induced Hanna Hetherington to foul out to third base to end the threat and close out the win for the Eagles.

Kinahan improved to 4-3 in the circle allowing three earned run on five hits in the complete game victory.

Hetherington continued to rake putting the Mustangs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with her eighth in the last eight games to tie the game at 2-2.

Mahaliyah Sandridge and ReAnne Drayton delivered RBI singles to post the Eagles to a 2-0 lead in the third before the Mustangs with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.

Dominguez paced MSU's five-hit attack by going 2-for-3 including a double in the third inning to go along with her third homer of the season in the seventh.

Sophomore Addi Hanna (0-9) took the loss for the Mustangs despite going the distance. She allowed six runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
