WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Kennedy Cameron accomplished something no other pitcher has done this season Friday night at Mustangs Park.
The sophomore from Longview shut out the No. 20-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce for 12 consecutive innings and deserved a much better fate.
But freshman Chanlee Oaks ended the run by smacking her first collegiate home run over the center field fence in the ninth inning to lift the Lions to a 1-0 win in the second game of the Lone Star Conference twin bill.
Texas A&M-Commerce struck for four runs over the first three innings of Game 1 on the way the way to a 4-1 victory.
Cameron came on in relief of MSU starter
Malea Rodriguez to pitch four scoreless innings of two-hit relief in the first game. She recorded three strikeouts and one walk.
She was just getting settled in, but showed incredible resiliency in the second game.
Cameron allowed just three hits through the first eight innings, but worked her way around nine walks.Â
She pitched her way out of a bases loaded with no outs jam in the fourth inning by inducing a foul out to catcher before punching out Uxia Modrego and Oaks to end the threat.
Cameron stranded three more in the top of the eighth inning once ending the threat by striking out Modrego.
But Oaks sent her second offering of the ninth inning over the fence for the only run of the game.
Midwestern State freshman
Mikey Dominguez belted her fifth home run of the season to left field in the fourth inning of Game 1 to account for MSU's lone score of the doubleheader.
MSU senior
Ashley Turner went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in Game 1, while sophomore
Hanna Hetherington broke up Texas A&M-Commerce pitcher Alyssa LeBlanc's bid for a third career no-hitter with a solid single to left field in the eighth inning of the second game.
LeBlanc finished off the two-hit shutout to improve to 8-2 in the circle and broke her own program record with 17 strikeouts.
Texas A&M-Commerce's Emily Otto claimed the win in Game 1 to improve 11-2. The senior allowed one run on five hits and recorded 12 strikeouts.
