Mustangs sweep past St. Edward's

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Hanna Hetherington blasted two more homers in the opener, then Midwestern State walked off a win in the eighth inning of the nightcap to sweep St. Edward's Monday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs improved to 5-16 on the season and leveled their Lone Star Conference record at 4-4, while St. Edward's fell to 10-10 and 3-5.

GAME 1 | Midwestern State 8, St. Edward's 5

Midwestern State's Hanna Hetherington belted a grand slam over the left-field fence in the fence and added a solo shot in the sixth to lead the Mustangs to an 8-5 win over St. Edward's in Game 1 Monday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The sophomore continued her tear with her third game with two homers in the last four while driving in a season-high five RBIs. Hetherington boosted her season totals to eight homers and 20 RBIs with sixth and seventh homers over a five-game stretch.

Freshman Sabrina Graf extended her hitting streak to six games driving in runs on singles in the first inning then added a second RBI-single to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

St. Edward's plated a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, then finally got to MSU starter Malea Rodriguez with three runs in the sixth inning to pull within two runs at 7-5.

SEU's Maddy Larson drilled a tripled just inside the right-field line to drive in one run before scoring on Lauren Hoyt's double to the right-field gap.

Rodriguez (1-2) earned her first win of the season in the circle allowing three earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. She registered two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Sophomore Peyton Lee earned a save in her first appearance of the season allowing one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Junior Bailey Brenek registered her 10th multiple-hit game of the season going 2-for-3 while scoring two runs.

GAME 2 | Midwestern State 2, St. Edward's 1 (8 innings)

Ashley Turner delivered a bases-loaded single to left field to plate Maci Sanders with the winning run to lift Midwestern State to a 2-1 victory over St. Edward's in the eighth inning of the nightcap Monday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Sanders, a freshman from Nomangee, led off the bottom of the eighth by drawing her third walk of the game, then sophomore Peyton Lee drilled a single off of SEU starter McKenna Leamon's foot.

Leamon exited the game following the play, but worked a stellar game in the circle for the Hilltoppers. She limited the Mustangs to a two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts before giving way to Cadie Belle Currie.

Currie loaded the bases by hitting Daylan Inkman with a pitch before Turner singled to left field to provide the winning edge.

The rally made winner of MSU starter Kennedy Cameron, who worked her way around nine walks to improve to 3-5 on the season. The sophomore allowed one runs on five hits while striking out six.

The teams exchanged runs in the third inning with St. Edward's striking on a RBI-double by Maddy Larson to score Jordan Neely. The Mustangs answered with Payton Griffin's bases loaded single off of the right-field fence to tie the game 1-1.

It remained tied into the eighth inning.

Junior Bailey Brenek logged her 11th multiple-hit game by going 2-for-4 with a double. Turner, Griffin and Lee also had two hits each to account for all eight of MSU's hits.

Hanna Hetherington also drew three walks for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State faces Embry-Riddle in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitches are slated for 1 and 3 p.m.
