LUBBOCK, Texas -- Hannah Reynolds collected her 1,000th point in Midwestern State's tough battle at Lubbock Christian on Thursday night. Though the Mustangs were hot shooting, the Lady Chaps' free-throw shooting took them to a 75-64 victory for their 100th consecutive home win.
Channing Cunyus started LCU with four points while MSU gave up four turnovers that led to seven points for LCU.
Midwestern State trailed for most of the quarter, but always had a response to Lubbock Christian's offense.
Eternity Jackson swished two free throws to cut the LCU's lead to one with less than two minutes on the clock.
Shawnisay Millar notched her seventh point of the game on three smooth shots and one free-throw. The forward was 3-of-3 from the field for the first ten minutes.
MSU's tough defense denied Juliana Robertson's final shot of the quarter to keep the one-point deficit. The Mustangs outshot the Lady Chaps with 42 percent on the field. MSU was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line while LCU made both attempts. Midwestern State defense held Lubbock Christian to just one three-pointer.
The visitors took the 17-15 lead on
Frances King's go-ahead three-pointer.
The Lady Chaps' shooting struggles continued as they had only two field goals up until the six-minute mark. They took a 22-19 lead on Laynee Burr's free-throws. The guard posted seven points in the first half.
Midwestern State went on a 4-of-4 run from the field to cut the lead back to one.
Hannah Reynolds recorded six points on 4-of-9 shooting.
LCU found a rhythm going on a 6-0 run. They posted 6-of-8 shooting from the field with one minute to play in the quarter. Whitney Cox made an immediate impact with five points to help the Lady Chaps to a 36-30 lead.
Robertson redeemed herself from the first quarter by clinching the shot in the final seconds of the half. Her team took a 38-30 score despite their 57 percent shooting from the field. LCU was 6-of-7 from the line and put in 24 points in the paint.
Midwestern State saw 63 percent shooting in the second quarter, but did not have any free-throws. King converted both of the team's three-pointers.
Burr's opening layup gave LCU the double-digit lead to start the second half.
Morgan Lenahan posted the Mustangs' first points of the half and her first points of the game.
The home side went on a 6-0 run that was ended by
Markayla Johnson's 3-pointer with six minutes to play. Midwestern State secured 3-of-3 field goals to keep within eight points of Lubbock Christian.
MSU started to get into trouble with fouls and turnovers with a two-minute scoring drought in the final three minutes of the third quarter. Midwestern State could not find a field goal for three straight minutes.
LCU converted on 5-of-7 from the field for the final minutes of the quarter though Burr missed the final shot. The Lady Chaps were 8-of-10 from the line to push to a 14-point lead.
Both teams were 6-of-13 from the field though Lubbock Christian outscored Midwestern State 21-13 on free-throws.
The Mustangs opened the final quarter with another turnover to total 15 on the game. The Lady Chaps were able to convert on 20 points.
LCU pushed the score to a 14-point gap as Allie Schulte turned in four points.
Midwestern State grabbed a 6-0 run over 2 minutes to cut the score to 66-56. Lenahan went 3-for-3 from the field to add six points in the first five minutes of the quarter.
Lubbock Christian could not find a field goal for a five-minute stretch and went scoreless for two minutes. Channing Cunyus fouled out and Shaylee Stovall knocked down two free throws to maintain the 70-60 lead.
The Lady Chaps continued to convert on free-throws as Midwestern State searched for points in the final minute and a half of play.
Eternity Jackson scored both of her free-throws and King collected the last layup to set the score at 75-64.
Lenahan led MSU with 16 points, going 6-of-9 from the field. King followed with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while
Jordan Mathis collected seven points. Midwestern State saw 51 percent shooting from the field and 60 percent from behind the arc. The Mustangs were 10-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Burr led LCU with 17 points, going 12-of-12 from the line. Ashton Duncan added 14 points while Grace Foster and Schulte contributed 10. Lubbock Christian shot just over 40 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three-point line. The Lady Chaps excelled with 27-of-31 free throw conversions.
Midwestern State returns to action at Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Lone Star Conference match tips-off at 3 p.m.
