Mustangs never trail in 74-61 victory over St. Mary's

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State took an early 7-0 lead and never trailed en route to a 74-61 victory over St. Mary's at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Monday night. Senior forward Jermane Carter recorded his sixth career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs, who ended a three-game slide and snapped the Rattlers' four-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Midwestern State hit 15 of 29 shots (51.7 percent) from the floor in the first half and led at intermission, 38-24.

Marquis Davison extended the MSU lead to 18 points, 53-35, with a slam dunk off a fast break with 12:10 remaining in the second half.

St. Mary's was within seven points, 57-50, with 3:53 to play after Mamady Djikine made two free throws. The Mustangs responded with a five-point run as Luke Hamilton hit a 3-pointer with 2:54 remaining.

Midwestern State shot 45 percent from the field overall despite going 5 of 29 from 3-point range.

MSU did not have a single turnover in the first half and only had nine turnovers in the game.

Caleb Jordan, who is the Rattlers leading scorer this season with 17 points per game, was limited to six points on 2-of-10 shooting from the field after scoring 31 points in an 81-66 victory at Cameron on Saturday.

- Jermane Carter made his last four shots, including a slam dunk in the final minute, and was 6 of 9 from the field. He had five offensive rebounds, and they all came in the second half.

- Junior guard Marquis Davison scored in double figures for the fourth time in five games, pitching in 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting for the Mustangs. Davison is shooting 74.1 percent from the field in his last three games combined (20 of 27), and he is averaging 15.3 points per game in the span.

- MSU sophomore guard Jordan Teal scored in double figures for the third time in four games, hitting 5 of 6 shots for 12 points. His only miss from the field was a 3-point attempt in the second half.

- Senior forward Luke Hamilton had three of the five 3-pointers for the Mustangs and scored 11 points.

GAME NOTES >>>

- Midwestern State improved to 3-6 on the season, while moving to 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play.

- Midwestern State was 22 of 31 (71 percent) from inside the 3-point arc, scoring 36 points in the paint. MSU shot better than 40-percent from the field overall for the sixth consecutive game, finishing at 45 percent on Monday night.

- Diego Gonzalez came off the bench for the Rattlers and finished 6 of 6 from the floor with a team-high 13 points.

- The Rattlers shot 43.1 percent from the field but went 3 of 14 from 3-point range.

- St. Mary's leads the all-time series, 19-16, and is 5-3 in the last eight meetings. Rattlers are now 6-13 all-time at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
