Mustangs deliver early knockout, roll past Northern Nazarene for second straight win

NAMPA, Idaho -- Midwestern State landed an early knockout punch Saturday night at the NNU Thanksgiving Classic, then cruised to a 78-57 win over host Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Midwestern State bolted out to a 22-2 lead and built a 27-point halftime advantage.

Northwest Nazarene struggled to 21.4-percent shooting in the first half against MSU's zone defensive schemes and managed to hit just one of its nine 3-point attempts.

The Mustangs dominated the battle on the glass controlled on a 49-39 rebounding edge led by Jermane Carter and Marquis Davison, who grabbed a team-high nine boards each.

Midwestern State built on an improved team shooting touch by shooting 45 percent or better for the second straight night.

Junior guard Pierre Sanders led a group of four Mustangs in double figures finishing with 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

- Midwestern State's Pierre Sanders scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game leading the Mustangs with 14 points. The junior guard from Hutto went 6-of-8 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers and added six rebounds and three steals.
- Senior forward Luke Hamilton buried a season-high three 3-pointers on the way to a campaign-best 13 points.
- Junior guard Marquis Davison narrowly missed a double-double finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds in his second start of the season. Davison led MSU with a sterling plus-31 in his 23 minutes of court time.
- Senior guard Derrick Ogechi splashed in a campaign-best three 3-pointers to finish with 12 points.
- Senior forward Jermane Carter scored nine points and matched Davison with a team-high nine rebounds.
- MSU limited NNU leading scorer Tru Allen to 15 points on 18 field goal attempts. Allen was 1-of-10 from the arc.

- Midwestern State improved to 2-3 on the season by beating Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene at the NNU Thanksgiving Classic.
- The Mustangs held Northwest Nazarene to 14 points in the first half. The total was the lowest by an MSU opponent since the Mustangs limited UT Tyler to 15 points on Jan. 2, 2020.
- MSU held a 27-point halftime lead taking a 41-14 advantage into the break. The bulge was the largest for the Mustangs since they took a 63-31 edge into the break in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament on March 2, 2016. Midwestern beat the Greyhounds, 112-68.
- Midwestern State won the battle on the boards for the third consecutive game controlling a 49-39 edge Saturday night against Northwest Nazarene. The Nighthawks have been outrebounded in each of their three losses this season.
- Northwest Nazarene flirted with its first sub 30-percent shooting effort since 2015 before finishing the game at 30.9 percent.
- MSU matched a season best by connecting on nine 3-pointers on 21 attempts (42.9 percent). The Mustangs had an identical performance from the arc in the season opener at Colorado State-Pueblo.
- MSU rebounded from three consecutive sub 30-percent team shooting performances by finishing at 46.4 percent against Central Washington and 45.9 percent versus Northwest Nazarene.
- The Mustangs logged a season high 14 assists on 28 made field goals against the Nighthawks.
