DALLAS -- Midwestern State outscored Dallas Baptist in the second half, 36-27, but the comeback from a 13-point deficit fell short at Burg Center on Wednesday night.
Pierre Sanders drove the length of the floor in the final seven seconds, but his layup rimmed out, and the Patriots held on for a 58-56 victory over the Mustangs.

Austin Garner scored all 13 of his points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and propelled the Patriots to a 31-20 halftime lead. Garner missed two shots in the second half, including a 3-point attempt.
Midwestern State was 8 of 26 from the field in the first half — 2 of 15 from 3-point distance.
DBU outrebounded the Mustangs, 43-37, and had 20 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. Midwestern State had eight offensive rebounds and 13 second-chance points.
MSU was on fire to start the second half. The Mustangs scored the first seven points of the half and made six of their first eight shots from the field, including 3-pointers from
Marquis Davison and
Derrick Ogechi.
An Ogechi 3-pointer started an 11-0 run for the Mustangs, who tied the game, 45-45, with 9:57 remaining after
Jared Washington scored a layup. Midwestern State would tie the game up three more times but could never take the lead.

Jordan Teal scored a season-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
- Senior guard
Derrick Ogechi poured in 11 points, hitting 3-of-9 shots from beyond the arc. It was the second-straight game that Ogechi hit three 3-pointers.
- Senior forward
Jermane Carter narrowly missed a double-double finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Mustangs. Carter also led MSU with five assists.
- Junior guard
Marquis Davison played 19 minutes and was 2 of 4 from the field for six points. Davison finished with three rebounds and two assists for the Mustangs.
- Cameron Kahn scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Patriots.
- Jalen White was the leading rebounder for DBU with nine boards. He also had four points and two assists.
- Ricky Lujan dished out five assists, and Ta'Jay Dunlap finished with four assists for the Patriots.

- Midwestern State dropped the conference opener and fell to 2-4 on the season.
- The Mustangs shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half, hitting 15 of 27 shots. MSU finished the game shooting 43.4 percent (23 of 53).
- Dallas Baptist entered the game shooting 47.4 percent from the field but finished the night 23 of 69 (33.3%), and the Patriots missed 16 of 28 layups in the game.
- Midwestern State was outrebounded for the first time in four games. DBU had the advantage, 43-37.

- Midwestern State has lost its last six visits to Burg Center, but three of the losses are by a total of four points. In 2021, the Mustangs lost 81-80 on Jan. 22, and the following day dropped a 91-90 decision to the Patriots.
