Pando leads MSU to win at Mustang Derby

BURKBURNETT, Texas -- Ella Pando led a stellar team effort helping Midwestern State to its second team meet win of the season Saturday morning in the Mustang Derby at River Creek Golf Course.

The freshman from Weatherford claimed front runner honors for the first time in her career racing to a fourth-place individual finish completing the 5K course in 18:59.90.

Pando had plenty of company from her fellow Mustangs within the Top 10.

Senior  Elizabeth Butzke placed fifth with a time of 19:01.00 followed by freshman Mariana Sanchez (19:47.00/sixth), sophomore Nathalia Escontrias (19:47.00/seventh), and freshman Rosalene Reyes Perez (19:53.70/ninth) as the Mustangs rolled up a total of 31 points to easily outdistance runner-up Western New Mexico which totaled 75 points.

The Mustangs previewed a challenging course which will be the site of the Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Freshman Jadyn Dangerfield Moore (19:55.80/10th) and junior Sydney MacDonald (20:11.40/17th) were the spacers for the Mustangs, while Perla Flores (20:29.40/25th), Arianna Carballeira (20:47.00/35th), Lula Nolen (21:05.30/40th), Allyson Talbot (21:08.80/41st), Isabel Hernandez (21:45.90/56th), and Valentina Sailer (24:43.40/90th) closed out MSU's efforts.

It was the second team meet win for the Mustangs which marks the first time since 2018 for the program to win multiple meets.

Western New Mexico's Gracey Lovato claimed top individual honors finishing the 5K course in 18:33.50. She was trailed by Hardin-Simmons' Kylah Holland (18:39.30) and Eastern New Mexico's Marta Pascoa (18:43.00), then the Mustangs claimed six of the next seven spots entering the chute.

Midwestern State competes in the DBU Old Glory Gallop Saturday morning at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.
