THE SERIES | Texas Tech has won two previous exhibitions. The Lady Raiders won the 2012-13 exhibition opener, 77-62. Prior to the 2016-17 season Texas Tech defeated MSU, 121-56.
LAST MEETING | Midwestern State visited Texas Tech for an exhibition in November of 2016, and the Red Raiders won, 121-56. Whitney Taylor scored 14 points to lead the Mustangs, hitting 5-of-10 shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers. Kristen Rydell was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and scored 13 points for MSU. Texas Tech shot 64 percent from the field and had six players in double figures, led by Japreece Dean with 21 points. The Red Raiders hit 13-of-25 shots from 3-point range.
LSC PRESEASON POLL |Â Midwestern State was picked to finish ninth in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll of coaches, sports information directors and selected media members. West Texas A&M received 31 of 39 first-place votes after winning the regular season and tournament titles in the LSC last season. Lubbock Christian received four first-place votes. The Lady Chaps lost to WT in the South Central championship game. TWU, coming off its most successful season in program history. Angelo State, which was 12-4 in conference play last season, placed fourth in the poll. UT Tyler made its first LSC Tournament appearance last season and rounds out the top five. Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M-International, Cameron, Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico complete the top 10 in the preseason poll.
2021-2022 SEASON IN REVIEW | Midwestern State finished with an 8-8 record in the LSC and was 14-13 overall. The Mustangs were 9-4 at home last season and won the final three games played at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last year. MSU was second in the league and 17th in the nation with 140 blocked shots, led by Hannah Reynolds, who swatted away 2.58 shot per game and finished the season with 67 blocks. Reynonds was third in the LSC and 19th in the nation in total blocks. Reynolds also led the Mustangs with 7.2 rebounds per game and was fourth in the LSC with a shooting percentage of 47.2. Frances King led the conference with 126 total assists and 4.6 assists per game. Morgan Lenahan was the leading scorer for MSU with 14.3 points per game.
SEASON OUTLOOK | Midwestern State returns eight players from last year's squad but three stalwarts — Reynolds, Lenahan and King — have departed.
The Mustangs have added junior guard
Natalie Stice, who transferred from Eastern New Mexico. Stice was the Greyhound's second-leading scorer with 13.3 points per game. Stice shot 32.2 percent (112-of-348) from the field, 27.7 percent (44-of-159) from the arc, and 75.8 percent (50-of-66 from the free throw line. The 5-7 All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention ranked 10th in the LSC with 44 made 3-pointers and connected on two-or-more 3-pointers in 14 games.
Senior forward
Shawnisay Millar is the leading scorer among returning players for Midwestern State. The native of Scotland averaged 7.8 points per game and pulled down 4.4 rebounds per game last season.
Senior guard
Markayla Johnson started 26 of 27 games in her junior season and finished with 29 steals and 17 blocks. Johnson averaged a career-high 4.4 points per game.
Senior guard
Sheridan Bostic returns for her fourth season with the Mustangs. Bostic is 69-of-191 (.361) from 3-point range in her career at MSU and averaged 5.1 points per game last season.
Senior forward
Jordan Mathis appeared in 21 games last season and was 31-of-55 (.564) from the floor last season. Mathis averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, averaging 17 minutes a contest.
Eternity Jackson, a senior guard from Burkburnett High School, has played in 68 games through her first three seasons and she averages 2.7 points, 1.4 rebounds and 14.7 minutes per game.
Yasmine Sifaoui, a 6-2 sophomore forward from Spain, had nine blocks and six steals in 27 appearances last season while averaging 3.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 8.6 minutes per game.
Mandy Withey has appeared in 56 games over three seasons with the Mustangs. The 6-0 senior forward has blocked 39 shots and recorded 29 steals in her career. Withey has averaged 10.2 minutes per game during her career with 3.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Maya Kendall is a redshirt freshman that has appeared in six games for Midwestern State. Kendall was a three-year letter winner at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano and helped the Lions to consecutive TAPPS 6A state tournaments.
MSU has added 5-11 freshman forward
Dyamon Griggs, who garnered District 14-5A MVP honors averaging 21 points and 17 rebounds per game at University High School in Waco.
Kennedi Green is a junior transfer from Temple College, where the 5-7 guard averaged 12.0 points, 5.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game as a sophomore while appearing in 28 games with 24 starts.
Freshman guard
Makenzee Boucher earned team most valuable player honors at Westlake Girls High School in Auckland, New Zealand, averaging 13 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 16 games as a senior.
Penelope Mathieu-Castillo transferred to MSU from Maine, where she competed in 14 games as a reserve forward. The Blackbears earned selection to the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). The 5-11 sophomore served as a two-year captain at Vanier College in Montreal leading the Cheetahs to back-to-back playoff appearances, averaging 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in three seasons.
REAY EMBARKS ON THIRD FULL SEASON AT THE HELM |Â Christopher Reay enters his 13th overall season on the Midwestern State bench and third full season as the head coach in 2022-23 after serving as the first assistant coach for the previous 10 seasons. Including his time as the interim head coach for the final 10 games of the 2019-20 season, Reay is 29-26 overall with a 23-18 record in LSC matchups.
