WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Senior
Aaliyah Burras led Midwestern State to its third-straight win on its home floor as the Mustangs swept past Western New Mexico at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Friday night, 25-12, 25-13, 25-20. Burras hit .588 with 10 kills on 17 swings without an error, and she was in on five of the Mustangs' seven blocks in the victory.
MSU improved to 4-2 at home this season — with sweeps over Cameron and WNMU. The Mustangs improved their overall record to 6-18 and earned their fourth win in 12 Lone Star Conference matches. Midwestern State has won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
The Mustangs won 15 of the final 16 points in the first set and hit .344 as Burras put down six kills, adding an ace and two blocks in the opening frame.
Midwestern State won the final seven points of the second set as freshman
Taygon Jones served three aces in the run. The Mustangs won the set despite hitting just .056.
After Western New Mexico took an 8-4 lead in the third set, Midwestern State head coach
Stephanie Radecki called a time out. The Mustangs won eight of the next 11 points to take a one-point lead, 12-11.
Burras had back-to-back kills and worked alongside freshman
Arrianna Fields to win a point with a double block during a three-point run as the Mustangs went ahead, 15-13.
Fields would record her seventh and final kill, and Jones would serve up her fifth ace during a four-point run to close out the match.
MSU hit .303 in the final set and finished the match hitting .265.
Western New Mexico hit a dismal .022 with 25 kills and 23 attack errors on 89 swings.
The WNMU Mustangs suffered their 12th-straight defeat and fell to 0-11 in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU is 2-21 overall and has not won since defeating Midwestern State, 3-1, in the LSC Crossover event at Denton on Sept. 9.
Fields hit .286 with just one attack error on 21 swings. Jones and
Sadie Portmann each finished with a team-high eight digs for MSU.
Midwestern State looks to extend its overall winning streak to three matches when it hosts East Central (Okla.) in a non-conference battle Saturday afternoon. First serve at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is scheduled for 1 p.m.
