WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Senior
Garrett Leek produced his 20th collegiate Top 10 finish to lead the Mustangs to a runner-up finish in the Midwestern State Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
Leek also creeped closer to a few more career milestones while posting three more par-or-better scores carding a 69, 68, and 70 on the way to a 6-under total of 207 to place fourth overall.
Leek was aiming to become the first golfer to repeat as individual champion in the tournament's 13-year history after winning in a dramatic fashion as a sophomore in 2019 closing the competition with a tournament record low round of 63 to edge out teammate
Jake Doggett.
Leek couldn't quite catch Texas A&M International junior Mauricio Figueroa, who fired scores of 67, 67, 69 to win by a single stroke over Midland College's Chris Wardrup and Colorado State-Pueblo's Jamie Roberts, but he climbed closer to etching his name at the top of a couple of significant list in MSU program history.
Leek has now posted 65 par-or-better scores during his career and remains seven behind Doggett. He also marked 14 birdies during the 54-hole tournament to bump his career total to 415 which is six less than Doggett's program record mark of 421.
Meanwhile, Midwestern State continued its stellar run of success at its home invitational. The Mustangs have logged six consecutive team par-or-better scores at the Wichita Falls Country Club and have finished no worse than runner-up in five of the last six years including wins in 2017, 2018, and 2021.

Midwestern State battled to within two strokes of eventual winner Midland College on a few occasions, but the Chaps closed strong to win by 10 strokes. MC rode the second lowest team round in invitational history with a 273 (-11) then fired a 4-under 280 in the final round to put away the title with a 54-hole total of 840 (-12).
