Midwestern State snapped a four-game slide by defeating St. Edward's 60-50 Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum to improve to 5-9 on the season and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play... The Mustangs evened their record at D.L. Ligon Coliseum to 3-3 this season... MSU held St. Edward's to its lowest scoring output in nine years in the 60-50 win as the Hilltoppers tallied their fewest points since falling to a Chris Beard-coach McMurry squad 59-49 on Feb. 2, 2013... The Mustangs have held their last two opponents to a season scoring low limiting UT Tyler to 69 points and St. Edward's to 50 points... To extend the run, MSU needs to hold St. Mary's to fewer than the 65 points the Rattlers scored in a 10-point loss to UTSA (11/29)... HEAD COACH JUSTIN LESLIE is in his third season at the helm of the Midwestern State men's basketball program. The Mustangs battled to an 8-21 mark in 2019-20 but closed the regular season by winning four out of five games to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. MSU also closed the 2020-21 regular season with four straight wins advancing the LSC Postseason Tournament for the second straight year with an 11-8 overall record. Prior to MSU, Leslie posted a 266-121 overall record (.687) at Azusa Pacific leading the Cougars to nine 20-win campaigns, two Pacific West Conference titles, seven postseason tournament appearance and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight showing in 2015. Overall, Leslie owns a 290-159 mark (.646) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach including a 24-38 record (.387) at MSU.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's has posted a 3-7 record against the ninth toughest schedule in NCAA Division II... The Rattlers' opposition has posted a combined a combined 69-37 record this season (.651)... St. Mary's has lost five of their last six games and are 0-4 in true road games this season... The Rattlers are 1-6 against NCAA Division II opposition with their lone win coming in the season opener against Colorado School of Mines before taking Regis (currently 10-1) to overtime... Senior guard Caleb Jordan leads a trio of Rattlers averaging double figures at 11.5 points per game... Jordan scored in double figures in six of 10 games matching a season high of 19 points Thursday night against Dallas Baptist... Senior guard Kobe Magee adds 11.1 points, 4.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game... Magee scored in double digits in each of his four outing hitting seven 3-pointers to finish with a campaign-best 27 points against Regis (Colo.)... Senior forward Josh Brewer pitches in 10.4 points per game off of the bench scoring in double figures five times this season with a high of 21 points versus Huston-Tillotson (12/4)... Senior forward Mamady Djikine scored in double figures in each of his last three games to boost his season averages to 9.6 points and five rebounds per game...
HEAD COACH JIM ZELEZNAK has spent the greater part of five decades serving in numerous roles at his alma mater. He served as a longtime assistant for Buddy Meyer helping the Rattlers claim an NAIA national championship in men's basketball in 1989. Zeleznak was also accomplished as a softball coach leading St. Mary's to an NAIA title on the diamond in 1986. He has served in the lead role for the men's basketball program for the last 17 seasons posting a 240-224 record (.517) leading the squad to four consecutive regional appearances from 2011-15.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and St. Mary's meet for the 35th time on the hardwood Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Rattlers hold an 18-16 lead in the series which dates back to the 1975 NAIA National Tournament. St. Mary's has won three of the last four meetings between the programs including an 80-72 win on Jan. 11, 2020 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Overall, MSU is 13-5 all-time against the Rattlers in Wichita Falls.
