WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestenr State earned a Senior Day split with Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs snapped a nine-game slide with a 3-2 win over ENMU in Game No. 1 before the Greyhounds rallied for their first win of the season by claiming rematch -- 10-4.
The opening game commenced in a quiet fashion for both teams, each going three up and three down in the first. The Mustangs grabbed their opening hit of the match in
Marley Eller's single up the middle. Midwestern State loaded the bases after
Maddy Holder and Eller advanced on wild pitches and
Daylan Inkman walked. Unfortunately, they could not convert for a score.
Good energy abound in the bottom of the fourth, MSU added a run from Holder's double to right center. Maite Bustillos walked
Payton Griffin and the sophomore later scored. This counted for Holder's second double of the season and she added another in the bottom of the sixth to push Eller in for Midwestern State's second run. Eller also contributed a two base hit earlier in the inning.
Up by two, the Mustangs lead did not last long. ENM scored twice on one play due to a throwing error by the home side. Mikenzey Patterson and Juliana Vidal were the scoring runners that tied the game. Brook Leger stepped on the mound for Tava Boone in the bottom of the seventh.
After
Carson Solis walked,
Bailey Brenek made a hard hit toward the pitcher to get on base.
Hanna Hetherington followed up with a single up the middle to load the bases for the second time in the competition. This time around, Eller's third and final hit came as a single to left field for Solis to score the winning run.
Kaitlyn Turner was the victorious pitcher, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Leger grabbed the loss as Eastern New Mexico's three pitchers combined for three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
To begin the second game, the Greyhounds came out energetically and notched the first score early. Though Eller and Griffin both singled in the bottom of the second, the team could not find home.
ENM added two more in the third on Tiana Boone's double to right center and Alanna Larkins' single to left. Midwestern State turned things around by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. Holder and Inkman put up singles to start the inning and Solis added another to push Holder home.
Ashley Turner wanted in on the fun and registered one of her own for Inkman to score. Solis and Turner brought home the final two runs on Eastern New Mexico's error.
The visitors responded with two runs in the fifth to gain the lead again. The team added three more in the fifth and two in the sixth. Though Brenek found a single and Eller doubled to left field, the Mustangs could not convert on any more hits. The Greyhounds held MSU scoreless through the final four innings to clutch their first win of the 2021 season in the 10-4 upheld.
Leger went 1-1 on the day by allowing no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in her four innings pitched. Midwestern State's three pitchers combined for five strikeouts with ten runs on 14 hits.
Addi Hanna now sits at 3-8 with K Turner pitching two innings and
Kathryn Wells closing out the final inning.
The Mustangs begin their final two weeks of play on Friday, April 23, against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The double header begins at 5 pm with the second game slated to start around 7 pm at Hubert Field. The team will then head to Texas A&M International on Sunday, April 25 for a double header before ending the regular season at Texas Woman's on Saturday, May 1.
